Axle ratios?

 Hi all,

I just have a quick question, do all G Wagens have the same ratio diffs?

The reason I'm asking is, I'm planning a 6x6 conversion of my dads old 1982 280GE, and I've been looking at a D-reg 300GD breaker, to use the rear axle and rear chassis section from.

If they are any any different, are there any markings on the axle to tell the difference?

Cheers Frank.

Re: Axle ratios?

There should be a plate on the diff that will indicate what is fitted. I *think I'm right in saying from memory that both the 300GD and 280 final ratios are 4.9:1 but someone will be along to correct me if not :-)

The 280 must be pretty broken to be transplanting parts of the chassis and axel?

In the meantime, I'll see if I can find you a table

Re: Axle ratios?

 Hello Frank,

There are three possibly four different axle ratios employed on G-Wagens. The ratios are plated on the axle.

You say you are converting to a 6X6 or do you mean 4X6? 6X6 is all wheels are powered or three axles are powered, whereby 4X6 is four wheel drive but having 6 wheels, of which, two are not powered; I ask because I would be interested to learn on behalf of the forum, what axles your are going to use that make up your 6X6?

Cheers,

Re: Axle ratios?

 Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
Our G isn't too badly broken, it's rough on the body, but we have owned it for 22 years, it got laid up when the bottom end let got in the original engine. Then, while we were looking for a replacement, my sister had an accident in our 1987 W126 500SE, so seeing as it was only covered 3rd party with her driving, we decided to drop the engine and box into our dead G.
We got about 80% done with the swap when my grandad was diagnosed with cancer, this is when my dad abandoned the project.

I'm not replacing the axle, I'm adding an extra 1, and I'm going to cut the body into a pick up, as this will remove 90% of the rotten bodywork.

Re: Axle ratios?

So, as I understand it, you are opting for a 4X6 in which case axle ratio would be irrelevant to you as the third axle will not be driven but act like a dead axle.

Re: Axle ratios?

As Rakesh has already pointed out if your third axle is not going to be powered then the axle ratio will be irrelevant because the diff will not be connected to a propshaft.

If your third axle is going to be powered I would be interested to know what diff you are going to use to transfer the power between No.2 to No.3 axle. MB do manufacture such a diff for the G which I believe is also used on the Pinzgauer but they are both rare and expensive. Have you come up with an alternative solution ?

What gearbox are you using with your 500 SE engine. If you have not been able to retain the transfer box from the G and you are fitting an unpowered 3rd axle then your G will only be two wheel drive which seems a bit pointless.

Re: Axle ratios?

 Where's all my writing gone?

It will be a true 6x6 using 2 tranfer cases.

I did do a full description, but the forum just wiped the lot!!

if you go to www.ppcmag.co.uk/forum and look in the build diaries section, you'll find a full description.

Re: Axle ratios?

If you can give me the chassis number from the 280GE i can give you the axle ratios incase the plates are missing.

I can probably give you all the 300GD options as well

Cheers Gav, I'll PM you tomorrow, once I've got both VIN numbers.

I have  had a quick look and I am impressed with the relative simpilcity of the idea, very ingenius.

I look forward to a through read latter on.

A good posting, Thank you,

Re: Axle ratios?

I have, had a chance to read carefully, the modification you intend as per the example to have posted.

What are you going to do to limit rear braking to the rear axles?

Would you have a single brake limiter fitted or are you going for two limiter valves?

Are you going to have both rear axles employed with locking diff's or just one of the rear axle?

I am expecting the Suzuki's transfer box ratio to be the same as the G- Wagens'; how fortunate.

The prop. shaft you intend using between the front-rear diff. and rear-rear diff.; is that a be-spoke built or a Suzuki shaft? - assuming the Suzuki shaft is torque capable to match your engine output, or are you taking a chance?

May I ask of you to record your turning circle before and after the conversion, I am interested to see if there is going to be a slight differences,

Finally, why are going the 6X6 way?

Regard

Re: Axle ratios?

I'll be using a custom made G Wagen/bespoke propshafts.

The Suzuki transfer box, is 1:1 ratio in high range, so is just splitting the drive from the rear of the G Wagen's transfer box.

Why am I building a 6x6? Why not?

Re: Axle ratios?

with all the  separate controls for the transfer boxs and locking diffs you are going to end up with a cab looking like this......

Re: Axle ratios?

It won't be too bad, there will be 1 extra diff lock plunger, and 1 lever for the 2nd transfer box, that's nothing compared to my Austin Champ.
