Waiting for enough clear weather to get final top coats of PO15 chassis paint on, I thought I'd undertake a service on the F wheel bearings since I don't know when they were last done and its been on my list for a while.

I have been trying to assemble a definitive list of parts - anything that is obviously missing?

Re: Complete wheel bearing and swivel service - parts list

 Hi Rakesh,

Thanks for the corrections.

I can feel some play in the bearings  - I know that the oversize tyres (33") are also quite punishing generally and my approach to this vehicle has been to just replace when in doubt as when its done I know its something I won't have to worry about again for the foreseable future.

Cheers,

Ben

Hello Ben,

Given the play in the wheel bearings, then that's fine, you are right in what you are intending.

Rakesh

Cool.. I'm getting really close now to having dealt with (properly!) every one of the problems that are so common in 300GDs of this age -from rusted pannels in the usual places to replacing the chassis shock perches, mounts, blower, multi-way wiring connectors and fuel tank swap .. When I'm finished she should be good for another 30 years I hope!

Re: Complete wheel bearing and swivel service - parts list

I think I have some play in my front wheel bearings. The drivers side one squeaks when I go round right hand corners.
I want to tighten them up a bit to see if it cures it. I will proabably have to replace both if it doesnt work. Do I need a special hub nut tool to do this? Is it normally a split pin holding the nut and a radio suppresion piece of brass under the grease cap? I have not taken the wheels off yet. Does the jack have to be place near the diff rather than near the wheel?
I see CV boots on the list. Should they be covering the large chrome balls'? Dont know the name. Mine are exposed where the meet the hub. Also i dont know if I should replace kingpins. What are the checks I need to do?
I'm still not sure where to see workshop manuals or diagrams for this area and servicing?

Thanks

Del

Take a look at the Axle Service - Front article in this:
http://www.clubgwagen.com/gtech.php?sid=listAll&pageTitle=Article%20Inde...

You can fabricate the slotted nut tool out of a suitably sized socket and an angle grinder.

If you are going to the trouble of stripping things down I would replace everything including the King Pin bearings. You don't need to use MB bearings. Once you have things apart you can get the bearings from any bearing factor. There's one on Maesbury Road industrial estate.

Nothing too complex but a long and messy job.

General consensus seems to be that you shouldn't try to tighten them. If there's play they have had it and could fail catastrophically if you don't change them.

Ok then. I had a look at the other site. Excellent stuff. I started to tackle the shock absorber change today but the bottom nuts would not budge and I dont have all my tools here. I did manage to WD40 everything underneath and even got a diff lock light to work on the dash. I think the switch or wiring on the diff lock is loose? G one off again but they seem like they are doing something when pulled.
I dont think there is any play in the drag links as they seem tight (just need some dust covers).
The wheel bearing also feel tight when rocking the wheel top and bottom.
I have a slightly notchy feeling at the steering wheel like the wheel is loose or the column is moving when going over rough ground. I'm hoping the stub axle is not broken as I have seen this written about.  Could this be Kingpin bearings?
I've sprayed the column UJ's and turning full lock seems fine other than a very strong return to centre  when I let go of the wheel. Is this normal?
I'm taking to a Landrover guy tomorrow to do the shocks and to investigate the pulling to the right. Left one must be seized.
I 'm going to get him to grease propshafts (Thanks Fixwin) and check the levels in the diffs and the steering swivels.
What type of grease or oils to use please? It looks very similar to the Landrover here on site underneath.
Anything else he could do as part of a quick service as I need it back same day??
