Hi,

I'm replacing the rubber boot for my cv joint, but I'm not sure where exactly the boot should sit on the axle.

The location for the inside clamp strip (the small one) is the main concern - should it sit on the steel sleeve?

See attached photo

Regards
Jacob

Hello,

Not sure if you are also doing this to a 460, but here is a guide that has a good picture part way through the page:

More good pictures/description here:

There was a recent discussion of this on pointedthree.com too but you need to register to view photos there.

Re: CV joint rubber boot

 Hi Jacob

That steel ring is what the seal runs on, look in the hub and you'll see the seal.
The boot sits in a recess further toward the cv or outer end of the shaft. The boot will be in a nuetral position when installed properly, ie not stretched out or compressed, it should be reasonably clear where it goes, post another picture of the shaft alone if you like and I (or someone) will point it out for you.

Cheers

Re: CV joint rubber boot

 Hi guys,

Please see attached photo.

I'm not sure if the steel ring is at the correct place on the axle. To find the right place I'll guess I should check that the seal sits on the steel ring by temporary fit the axle on the car?

Should I heat up the steel ring to move it?

Thanks

Jacob

 Hi Jacob

What year is your G?
That photo looks like the diff end of the shaft on older models (where the oil seal is beside the diff housing), as there is no grove around the splines for the cv retaining circlip.
Can you post a photo of the whole shaft? That last photo isn't the same as the first with the boot on it.

 Good spotted Stig!

The photo is from the Hans Hehl site - I thought all the shafts were the same.

Attached is another photo - I didn't take a photo o fthe shaft without the boot I'm affraid...

Re: CV joint rubber boot

 Hi Jacob

Ok, the seal ring is in the correct place, the boot is sitting where it should, I was wrong about a recess, there isn't one, secure the boot where it is and all is good. The machined surface on the shaft behind the seal ring runs in a bush which you'll see sitting behind the seal in the hub (axle). When you reinstall all this, you must make sure you get the swivel housing centered correctly with the king pin shims and preload. There is actually a centering ring that you should temporarely install over that seal ring, which centres the shaft in the seal housing while you measure king pin shim requirements. Hope that makes sense. If you don't do this, you run the risk of the shaft running against the bush behind the seal, and the seal not running centrally. There is a workshop manual procedure for all this somewhere but I can't find it. Not as complicated as it sounds!

Cheers
