The rear door on my 463 G is getting progressively stiffer to close/open. I have search for other posts on this subject with no real success. I have tried flushing with WD40 and oil but this made little differnece.

My question is -  has any other member had this problem and what did they end up doing -  is changing the hinge pins a good option or is it best just to bite the bullet and change the whole hinge(s)?

I can see changing the pins would be cheaper but if the wear and tear is also in on the hinge, changing the pin is probably not the answer.

Any advice welcome, thanks

Re: Door Hinges

In my experience with W460 front doors, changing the pin is a waste of time. The wear is in the hinge barrel (is that the right word?) that houses the pin. I have found some W460 hinges are welded to the door (making them very difficult to swap out), others are not. I think the W463 hinges are a bolt-on job so change the full hinge. Consider changing both.

Re: Door Hinges

I assume you're talking about the car in your profile, the SWB, so you must mean the rear cargo door. In my experience stiffness can also be caused by the door check on the side doors (that keeps them from opening beyond a certain angle). Try cleaning and lubricating it (if it is the side doors). If it is the cargo door, the door check is a bit more complex (there are 2 types I have seen on the 463, one with a ball and spring, and earlier models with a pin?), and can be lubricated. Have a look under the door while open...I think it's number 29 in the image:

Re: Door Hinges

Many Thanks for posting/sharing the link, its a mega site.
Is the full EPC online for the G wagon? what the mercedes dealer use?
Can you please explain a bit more as to how you navigate through to access this info on the 460?

IndyG: Anyone can now sign up for access to the EPC online, just needs Windows and Internet Explorer, very picky on that bit. I think it costs something like £20/year.

Only thing it doesn't give you is online prices, but this page is good for that:

Big Al: I had a stiffness issue with a front door, and took it to a body shop to look at. He tested it for play and found none, so he suggested I do nothing with the pins (that was the first thought that came to me too). Instead he recommended copious (repeat) lubrication of the hinges, and greasing the door check.

Re: Door Hinges

Has anyone experience of the above mercedes website www.service & parts . . .How much detail is available from the website  for the repair of parts / how to & torque figures that should use when replacing parts ?

I have to replace the bushings of my ('93  463 gdl)  front anti roll bar so will need the torque figures for the various bolts. If someone has done this before i would appreciated any tips &/ or photo's on how they got on.

Thanks

PS Back to hinges now

Re: Door Hinges

So if 463 ones are bolted on? would you not need a part number for a 463 or a vin/chassis number to purchase one from the dealers to replace the 460 door hinge?
