HI.  In the 1980s  I worked with Oxfam in Sudan. We were equipped with Landrovers with all the bells and whistles for desert driving. If we had any distance to travel we would go in convoy with a German team in their G-Wagen so that one could pull the other out if we got stuck.
It was ALWAYS them pulling us out! I decided then that one day I would own one. Well, I was 65 in April and it was now or never. So I am now the very proud owner of a black  280GE.
There is a rattling sound from somewhere in front of the driver's feet, mostly on acceleration from standing (when there is the most vibration) and especially noticeable when turning steering wheel to the right. It is definitely more of a rattle than a knock.
Does anyone have any thoughts about what it might be please?
(a reconditioned steering box was fitted by the previous owner about a year ago)

thanks   Howard

Hello Howard,

Sorry I have absolutely no idea about the problem. But what you have done with a charity organisation is very admirable. :D

Welcome to the club! You might have come across fixwin38, I think he worked in Sudan as well a long time ago (I know Sudan is a very big country, but I suspect like a lot of places with a very small minority of Europeans, they all soon get to know each other).

It would help if you add your location (in the menu item on the left under "My account ") so then people close to you might be able to tailor help to your location.

Could be a number of things, if it happens while turning, have you checked the bearings? Drive-shafts? Maybe even the exhaust? Ideally you need a good look in the engine compartment and under the car...perhaps someone with a 280 of that vintage can help further.
regards,
M2

Re: steering rattle

Hi Howard
I was in Khartoum for a number of years in the sixties as an SGO at the airport..your G' sounds like one that was owned by Tom Holley ...a common rattle is the alignment of the front section of the exhaust with has limited space next to the starter and chassis ..trouble is things get corroded from the heat and hard to re align to the extent that things can break .a new front section from MB is GBP 300 + so best to avoid damaging the existing pipe ...I hope this helps...and congratulations on becoming a G' owner

Re: steering rattle

Howard. I think I became so accustomed to that rattle that I forgot all about it. A mechanic and I did some investigations when trying to sort the steering issues out just after I bought Dez and concluded that it must be coming from within the cabin. I always meant to take casing off from around the steering column and make sure everything was tight and lubricated but never got round to it. What you really need to do is have someone lie in the footwell while you drive but that's pretty much a physical impossibility (and not very safe)!

Good luck, I miss Dez . Already finding myself looking at other G's!

Just check pinch bolts are tight on steering column, from Steering Box to below brake servo?
