Hi Dan
does it increase in frequency when you rev the engine? does it go away when engine is hot? what grade and type of oil are you using?

Engine related, doesn't go away when hot.

Re: Tappets

The engine never gets that hot, the temp neddle stays just out of the first white block on the gauge.  (I had the radiator recored some years ago and it has run cool since then.

However, I am not thinking that the thermostat may be knackerd.

Also, when the engine is not running the fan turns freely.  When you start the engine though the fan runs even from cold.  I though the fan was only meant to cut in when it got to a certain temp?

Re: Tappets

Hi Dan mineral oil grade is OK for temperature indicated !!!which should be indicating just to the left of  vertical on the pointer.at normal speeds and slightly hotter in traffic would suspect thermostat stuck in open position ..fan will "Idle" when cold and as the viscous clutch gets hotter the blades turn faster...your cold start system must be slow to return to idle at 750/800 rpm after a cold start if the temp indicator is reading correctly.....I have known the sender in the cylinder head to be at fault especially if there has been an "overheating" incident.....tappet noise should reduce somewhat as the engine gets hotter ...a worn cam lobe would give you a permanent ticking sound.most likely towards the front of the engine which is last to get the oil.  timing chain wlill make zizzing sound if suffering from loss of tension There is a special tool for adjusting the valve clearance but a 17mm crowfoot spanner will work if you remove each clip.*** Note.there are no tappets on the M110 engine as in other engines with a centre screw and a locknut ......

Re: Tappets

I am now thinking this may be exhast related, but near the engine upstream of any silencers.

I will investigate further, thoughts welcome.

Re: Tappets

I  think it is the front exhaust manifold.  When you take the ht lead off the third cylinder from the front the noise stops.  It seems like I may need a new manifold etc.  These are expensive from MB.  Is there a cheaper alternative?
