Are G500 gearboxes designed to prevent down shift below D ?

Met a chap who has one who told me that to protect diffs the gearbox blocks the shift lever to prevent shifting into lower gear.

Is this correct ?

Cheers

Mickey,

Forget my last post - am just re editing it.

I have just popped out and your friend is right, if your going to fast /have high rev's the gear box will not let you select a lower gear until you have reduced the revs

Re: G500 gearbox - down / up shifts ?

And how about upshit?
My G500 seems to love the 1st gear since I have taken her out of storage thus I have only driven for about 100 meters since. Any ideas please?

Thanks.

Re: G500 gearbox - down / up shifts ?

Hi
does your G' have the "sealed for life" gearbox? because holding in 1st when drive is selected  can be caused by low or contaminated oil ..other reasons can be electronic....

I am not sure what type it is, its a 1998/99 model.

If it is sealed for life then how can oil get contaminated or low? and how can this be fixed now?
Also if it is electronic then which part located where might be causing it?

Thanks

Hi kam2kam,

my 500 had a similar issue: it is the same year as yours. Basically the transmission oil was old: just a simple case of changing the oil and filter (and erasing the error codes on the emu). now she runs perfect again.

Hope that helps and good luck/ph

Up shifting? Well, once you reach the max out rev's you will find the engine protection system will kick in and the engine will start to 'misfire', its then I would suggest upshifting to the next gear.

Re: G500 gearbox - down shifts ?

My G500 gearbox has 385,000km on it. I've done a fluid  drain and filter change twice.  I've recently done a total fluid flush and this made a noticeable difference to the smoothness and reliability of the gear shifts.  You need 14 litres of fluid as well as a new filter. The (simple)procedure is described in the WIS, though I disconnectedd the fluid return line just after the in-bumper radiator, rather than at the transmission housing, in order to pump out the fluid. Highly recommended.
