Can anyone tell me what I would need to import a G from Spain? What documents do Spanish registered cars have to have when they are sold? I'd like to bring it back to the UK. Does anyone know what the tax and duty charges would be?

Its a 1992 car so I don't know if the Gov will charge me VAT on the purchase.

I'm guessing duty will be 5 or 10%??

Will road tax be based on emissions (high for most diesel cars) or this this just for newer cars?

Any help please??

Not sure on most of that but...

As for tax, the emmision rating did not come in until 98/99 so it will be just a set fee same as any older G

£220 for 12 months i reckon

Cars and light goods vehicles registered before 1 March 2001

The rate of vehicle tax is based on engine size for cars and light goods vehicles registered before 1 March 2001.

Private/light goods (TC11)

Engine size (cc) 12 months rate 6 months rate
Not over 1549 £135.00 £74.25
Over 1549 £220.00 £121.00

You will need the Spanish reg documents, then you get a Certificate of Conformity. MB at Milton Keynes can do that or there are place advertising on net.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

If it is a private import, you need nothing whatsoever.

If the car has paid EU-VAT in the country of origin (Spain), you have to pay no UK VAT when importing the vehicle.

You just need the Permiso de Circulación (equivalent to the V5) and the Ficha Técnica (if it is a 1992 model then it has a UK-spec equivalent and this paper acts as the certificate of comformity).

So: No duty, given that it comes from another EU-member state.

No VAT if it is a personal import, registered in an individual's name.

If you are importing a vehicle from another EU country then there is no import tax only VAT.

If the vehicle is a used vehicle then there will be no VAT to pay provided that it has already been paid in another EU state. You will need to be able to prove this with the original invoice for the vehicle or other documentary evidence.

Vehicles over ten years old do not require a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) but they will be required to meet  MOT standards for that age of vehicle and must be modified accordingly.

Thanks. That's just what I thought (not).

So if it is  German car what';s the equivalent V5 and MOT called over there that I'd need. Anything else that's required to buy a car and move it over here permanent?

So this also leads me to ask.....What items need to converted for UK MOT purposes once it's in?

I'm thinking headlights to right hand drive ones, MPH speedo installed. My font of all wisdom (FIXWIN) also says rear fog lamp as well?

Some MOT places will accept tape on the headlights. Fog light needs to be on right hand side. Not sure about speedo these days.
