Recently fitted one replacement KYB spring to the rear ( I know I should renew in pairs), however it bottomed out so easily, I then tried KYB Heavy Duty ( Which I think are just LWB Springs) , no bottoming out, a much firmer ride, which I prefer, only slight disadvantage is a small vibration due to to the increased ride hight, interestingly the standard KYB spring was about two inches shorter than the old one.

Re: KYB Springs Rear

Hello JASONGDS,

Is, or are the shock absorbers O K ?  Since the KYB Spring was shorter than the old one, it is quite possible the KYB Spring is wrong.  The matter would require further comparison with another spring of same part number.  Spring issues are complicated enough dealing with the M/Benz equipment; after market parts, try to makes things simpler or easier to choose and select; may not have correct solutions to offer.

Springs; although seemingly simple to look at, have may considerations in its design and performance, the coil thickness, number of coils, shape of coils, height, etc, etc....

Cheers,

Re: KYB Springs Rear

It is an strange world, by which I mean the world of Merc OEM springs. I had a 420SL before the G. When I replaced the front springs (apparently they were brittle on the 85 SL and early C class), the front of the car sat 2 inches higher.

Switch to my 85 300GD and the OEM rear springs - standard rate as a SWB - and the car seems to sit lower at the rear (I have had my G for 5 years and am on my second full set of Merc shocks and springs) I don't really off road but do have a habit of putting bags of sand and cement in till it looks painful!.

Which is a very roundabout way of saying even if you stick to VIN verified Merc suspension parts you may well end up with a different ride height and/or a car that squats!

Re: KYB Springs Rear

Especially if the parts guy sells you the wrong springs...

used to happen all the time onW123, W124 and W201 series in the 80's and 90's

Very hard to work out the correct springs and the result usually ended up with very high front ride hieght!!!

Nearly all MB springs have the part number punched into the top coil to check new against old when swopping

ORC +2" springs are also shorter than standard MB springs.

I can't afford the geniune onesat about £200 each? Wouldn't mind except I seem to break them every two years. Can anyone recommend a quality pattern spring, I do find the heavy duty option a bit too heavy duty!
