M102 Timing Chain
Does anybody happen to know what year Mercedes changed from simplex to duplex timing chains on the M102 (230GE) engine? Were duplex chain engines ever fitted to the later 460 G's? Thanks
Just going through old threads and noticed this one had gone unanswered.
The duplex chain was used on the 280GE, M110 engine throught out its production.
As to the M102 engine, I do not know; I can only assume, it was a simplex chain system and if it did use a duplex, then it would have been on a cosworth conversion. The cosworth was not introduced on the G-Wagen, only in saloons.
Hi
Crewe Engines will tell you by serial number but my understanding is that G' M102 engines from 1988 had the duplex chain....
Hi
Yes early M102 has simplex upto engine M102.987.20.001588 for a manual and M102.987.22.000758 for an auto.
therefore a late M102 has duplex from engine M102.987.20.001589 and M102.987.22.000759 respectivly.
The M102.987 is the engine type
The 20 or 22 is RHD Manual Trans or RHD Auto Trans
Could be 10 or 12 for LHD Manual Trans or LHD Auto Trans
The last six digits are the unique serial number

what is the life of the duplex chain.?
. Am I looking at a replacement at 103k miles? Is it a costly change and are the cogs it runs on supposed to be changed also ( like on a motorcycle final drive chain ) ??
thank you.

1990 460 SWB 280 GE 103k miles
Check the timing marks align when at TDC. If they are ok then no need to consider a replacement chain. Duplex chain should last for twice that distance at least.
ok thats good info thank you....
John your 280GE has the M110 Twin Cam 6 not the M102 OHV 4
Never heard of any timing chain issues with the M110 engine
Very robust.. Just a tad thirsty
