My dad gave me this months copy of "Classic & sports car" where they had a back to back comparison of an '80s G-W and a Range Rover classic.

It's a big file, sorry, about 13mb, by the time i'd scanned the pages in. But it makes for interesting reading.

enjoy!

Re: Magazine scan

Hi Jamie,

Unfortunately my malware protection does not allow downloading the site you have posted and trying to view the file is also down for the moment or at the time of this draft.  However, I will try latter.

This is my general comment and views based on comparison publications by largely, British motoring journalists. There have been quite a few articles written on comparing the Land Rover/Range Rover against G-Wagens'. My opinion is this cannot be done. I have seen articles (sorry I cannot support this with evidence but my word) making comparisons between W460 Chassis G-Wagen with Range Rover and moderately modern versions of Range Rover against a W463 G-Wagen.

I have never read a comparison of Land Rover against W460. If a comparison is to be made it should be on even keel and the W460 should be compared to the Land Rover, the W463 against a Range Rover.

Most British motoring journalists praise and rightly boast on the large wheel articulation of Land and Range Rovers; this is a necessary element for traction when off roading. However, I have never seen it be mentioned by the motoring journalists that, the G-Wagens' has a distinct advantage in that, they are equipped with internally operated differentials making the need of wheel articulation obsolete. Furthermore, the fact it is, the G-Wagen is equipped with front and rear axle locks; technically, if a G-Wagen just has one wheel on ground it can maintain momentum.

The Land Rover at least needs two wheels of the same axle on ground to maintain momentum. If one wheel looses traction, momentum on that axle is lost. The G's axles locks cover this disadvantage making it a superior off roader. That's what makes a G-Wagen.

Others comment on an outdated body and looks, my question what has a Land Rover; still that same sillouehete shape, drastically no different to a G-Body. O.K. the G-Wagen is an expensive buy but you are buying into proven quality, reliability, reputation and pedigree. The G-Wagen is to a large part is manually assembled - a certain formula for expense.

Please do not think that I am attacking the Landie or have anything against Landie Lovers, until I came to experience G-Wagens I liked Range Rovers but now I have something, I consider it to be better. I feel if it was not for the Range Rover we may not have had a G-Wagen because, suspension design is so similar. The front and rear axle control arms are the give-a-way here. The G-body design is a cousin to the VW Itilis and at one point it was considered that the G-Wagen should have the Porsche 928 – V8 engine; I think it was a pity they did not follow that through. I am itching for someone to take that conversion up.  When it comes to the ‘football match’, I am chanting for the G-Wagen. There is a proviso here no matter what the vehicle is I am vehemntly against having ECU systems controlling conditions for off roading like descent control features or worse still, having ABS systems maintaining locking diff features.

Anyhow, I will try attempting to get onto the link and if possible look forward to reading the article.

Re: Magazine scan

Good job you were not at the Iron Mountain evevnt. The new G's have ECU's all over the place AND you can now only engage your diffs in low range!. I Think the G, while still an awesome truck is being neutered by EU H&S and legislation :(. I was stunned at the ammount of toys they now put in a G. You have loads of things to play with, touch screen driven. Personally I think they would increase their sales if they dumped half of the stuff they put in and reduce the price....... but thats just me.

But the article is a great read and very pro Range Rover and I am sure thats Axels G before the addition of his 606 and VBH!
