Hi

First note to say thank you for the advice on servicing just working our way through the list!

On our G300 ge LWB manual 1991 we seem to have developed a small oil leak from the back of the gear box I think where the prop shaft / drive shaft come out.

The oil seems to be collecting on the cross section of the sub frame and we are getting a few drops over night. There looks to be oil residue above the shaft as if its been spayed up as we drive.

It does seem that if I put my hand above the rear mounting bracket below the gear box there seems to be a little trans fluid but when I check the oil left on the floor it seems more engine oil?

Is there a transmission fluid level check?

Is there a seal on the Back of the gear box? If so is it an easy job and would any one know the part number? Would like to get it all sorted the next service in the next few weeks.

I have read on one old post that over filling the oil can be the cause, our oil levels seem to be abit irregular but I'm not aware of over filling or any excess smoke out the exhaust.

Many Thanks

Mish

Re: Oil leak behind gear box

Hi Mish,

To confirm rear gear box seal leak, look above on the vehicle floor, directly above the gearbox flange. You will see some oil spread flung out by the flange if it is the rear oil seal leaking. Other places close to the rear flange could be on the left side (near side). There could be a round to ovalish looking cap, the source of a leak. This is a speedo bung which has a o-ring as the cause of leaks.

Clean off the collected oil on the gear box mounting so not to confuse your oil leaking diagnoses. Lay some card  (use an old card board box and open it up to lay flat on the floor) on the floor to trace your leaks. The engine oil leak would forward of the rear gearbox leak. Hence lay down some card this will give you clear evidence of oil leak positions.

Re: Oil leak behind gear box

I thought I had same problem a few months ago but it was just new rear springs causing Gbox to be over full, check yours isn't overfull , remove side filler plug on leval ground I( Should be obvious to see , large allen key head on side of gearbox) and see if excess oil comes out?

the required seal is

If the outter, inner diameters and depth match, there is no reason to suppose the seal will do its job.

That is a different seal, whilst they both apply to the 717.43X/44X model of gearboxes, they are not the same size abd are for different applications.

The correct seal is only circa £10 gbp, why not just buy a new one?
