So what would be a opening price for an ex Afgan/ Iraq armoured G. Wouldn't that be great in the sand

Not the faintest what a somtimes mobile but mostly self emplacing? pill box would be worth, in the sand, or anywhere else for that matter.

Careful  they sink in sand!  "no point in being a pillbox; pillboxes are a dime a dozen"  in the immortal words of a Viet Nam vet liaison officer at Sandhurst.  He carried on ... "you gotta use the high-speed tarmac approach routes" - a metalled road to you and I - and thus obviating the need for a G.  See Jason Elliot on the subject again (Kalbul 07)

They are guide priced at £25k with approx 10-15k miles on the clock.  2004-6 year G500's
I suppose even the glass is bullet proof.

Those are factory armored Guards in B6 level without any doubt. Worth at least 350 000 euro when new. Anyway, they look pretty beaten, like 1 010 000 kms, not 10 000 kms. .

They could make a lot more than 25k or sell at 15k plus commissions

The crate of spares would be nice

Re: Psssst.........wanna buy an armoured "G" Wagen, LHD & ...

Why are the so knackered inside and what did they actualy use them for?

Assuming that the damage is mostly cosmetic and that they are a relatively rare commodity is there money to be made in refurbishing them and then selling them on.

If a new G armoured to this standard is really circa £300k then at around £25k they seem a bargain.

I don't think they are worth 25k unless you are going to use them in a hostile country. And anyone who requires a guard is not going to be short of cash. They wouldn't be much good for spares as so many of the parts are guard specific. You could remove the body and put a standard 463 and you would have a 500 with heavy duty axles and runflats.
3" glass & 5mm steel plate inside the panels, really useful

Yep - two in convoy could make the run down the middle and Chad etc do-able.  An inexpensive little jaunt.  MPG most horrible though.  Those things weigh in at more than Mrs Widdecombe - and as I say they sink in sand.  Now who has read Elliot's The Network where one of these lumps features highly?

Re: Psssst.........wanna buy an armoured "G" Wagen, LHD & ...

I agree I don't think they are worth £25k if the intention is to convert them to standard G500 roadgoing spec.

My point was that if they cost £200k new and they appear to have only cosmetic damage then at around £25k plus refurb costs there could well be a profit to be made selling them on as exactly what they are,  guard spec G wagons.

I don't know what type of market there is for used armoured vehicles but I imagine presented in the right condition there are plenty of end users throughout the world for this type of G at a massive saving on the new price.

Re: Psssst.........wanna buy an armoured "G" Wagen, LHD & ...

I don't think they are worth much. I mean, whoever needs an amoured G would not seem to be short of cash, would he? I remember the ex-Turkish embassy in Dublin armoured 300GE... it has been for sale for ages and obviously nobody wanted a G that weights 3.5 tons and is slower than a diesel Series II Land Rover.

I am amazed at how liberally the British MOD wastes taxpayers money: € 300.000 new and 10,000 miles after they look totally knackered!

Re: Psssst.........wanna buy an armoured "G" Wagen, LHD & ...

Has any one been to actually see them? I am surprised at only 10K - they don;t ship them over to some of the embassy;s / high commissions in Africa or the 'Stans'? As big Big has mentioned a small fee to upgrade the interiors and away one goes.... Much more economic than losing all that money in depreciation?

But what the Heck... its only money and what we spend now, my grandchildren can sort out in their life times.....

Shocked from Beaconsfield

Re: Psssst.........wanna buy an armoured "G" Wagen, LHD & ...

Does anyone know how much heavier the conversion is than standard? How much difference would there be in swapping the 5 doors for 2nd hand standard ones and would the reduction in the weight make much difference, I suspect it would and ought not to be crippling financially...

I remember reading 4.2t all up, so about 3.5 empty, depending on the level of armour.

Re: Psssst.........wanna buy an armoured "G" Wagen, LHD & ...

Hi Spider,

I was up at Withams in the summer and saw a batch of guard Gs. If these are the same ones then I can assure you that they are in a terrible state inside and (in some cases) out. I agree with Mortinson, just how you can get a perfectly good vehicle into such a condition in so short a time, I do not know as it didn't look that they were involved in a crossfire incident - total waste of taxpayers money! (not the first time this has been said.....).

Basically, most of them have the dashboards stipped including the central gear column. Some of the seats are torn and others have been removed. Externally, most of them have had the windows cracked (apparently they did this purposefully in demob so the people couldn't use them for civvy applications - just how that makes sense I do not know) and the mirrors removed. They all look in a pretty sad state once you got close up to them. I wasn't allowed to take photos at the time so didn't.

I would have thought converting them to normal 500s would be a total waste of time and money......which it seems is probably the point that the demob chaps want us to think!

as nice as they could be they are sadly in a complete state, how have they managed to damage them that way, who the hell was using them!

its a shame as buyers would snap them up to ship world wide other wise!

Re: Psssst.........wanna buy an armoured "G" Wagen, LHD & ...

I case anyone is interested here is an update on what the armoured G Wagons sold for.

From the limited information available on the MOD sales website it would appear that that the following prices were obtained for the eight vehicles.

Lot 191  £9500
Lot 193  £9500
Lot 194  £9500
Lot 195  £9500
Lot 198  £20604
Lot 199  £19101
Lot 202  £6500
Lot 203  £9500

It would appear that someone has bought five of them. Expect to see them back on the market in the near future refurbished and being sold for a huge profit, probably back to the MOD !!

Re: Psssst.........wanna buy an armoured "G" Wagen, LHD & ...

I tried to place a bid on a couple of these ( well all of them) individually of £7000 but it would not be accepted as minimum tender was 15K.  Must have been someone more in the know than me who bought these.

These armoured G go for a mint in Russia and Eastern Europe. My wife's lithuanian and with the life style they have there these vehicles are well needed. They pay fortunes for G wagon s especially armoured.
