Hi all, the universal joint has disengrated at the differential end of the rear propshaft. A search on The Internet has revealed that the joint cant be changed at home. Instead of the spider cups being held in by circlips they are spiked (which i don't understand?). For ultimate durability is it worth obtaining a replacement from a MB parts supplier? I've been led to believe that the yoke can be reamed and then the cups spot welded into place. I would be gratefull if anyone can shed some light  on the matter.

Re: Rear propshaft

I have allways gone to my local commercial prop shaft specialist - they fix lorry props all day long and know what they are doing. Importantly they will re balance the shaft after the repair.

nb. don't loose the phasing on the slip joint before or after balancing - mark the joint with paint.

Hi
the new universal joint can be bought from the manufacturer Bailey Morris Part number BM 78 for GBP 69.36 + vat .... any local propshaft specialist can fit it ..Grease all the propshaft nipples (9) in all  on the 460 series with a good multi purpose grease to avoid this problem in the future.....

Re: Rear propshaft

I am including some URL's for prop shaft repairers.  I have used Bailey Morris in the past, the others on the list I have not used or heard of any one elses' experiences.

The advice given above is good and I suggest you take note.  I re-emphasis the point of marking the sliding shaft to prop. shaft as the phasing is important to the balancing of the shaft.

I don't know where you are based but for anyone in the northwest I can highly recomend (80,000miles so far) http://www.driveline-hydraulic.co.uk/
They do a mail order service too if you don't have anyone local.

As well as marking the slip joint position I also mark the flanges/diff/transfer box too, probably not necessary but every little helps.

Re: Rear propshaft

Hey, i know this is a little late but another great place for prop services in the North West is North West Props in Trafford Park, Stretford. I have taken my front prop to be tightened up which they did for free & they replace UJs at about £100 + vat i think.

Hope this helps.

Re: Rear propshaft

I need to grease my props. I have the original flat 'bolt' style grease nipples and want to use the nipple types during the service juts to get some grease in. I'll put the originals in after. I dont want to buy a new gun so can anyone tell me the thread size for a standard nipple to fi the hole? Is it M8, M10 ??? Any ideas please?

Thanks

Del

Re: Rear propshaft

 Hello Del,

I am sorry, I have forgotten these sizes for now.  I suggest that, you remove sliding shaft and UJ grease nipples and take these to your supplier, he would be able to measure the nipples for you and get either just one of these conventional nipples and use this to grease the joints and replace with M/Benz's or simmply buy the whole set and replace them all.  There are three nipples per prop. shaft.  I think these could be either M7 or M9. with a pitch of 1.25, but don't hold me to it.

Cheers,

Re: Rear propshaft

Hi

I agree in part with Fixwin

but EPC list two types....

M6 X 1 or M8 X 1

I have checked a few sample W460 chassis numbers and they list a mixture of each on most usually M6 x 3 and M8 X 6

Hope this helps

Re: Rear propshaft

Cheers. I didnt see these comments. I'm going to do them again. The nipples are a large size so probably M8's
