I am not getting any joy from the search function, therefore, has anyone retro fitted an aftermarket A/C system to their G-Wagen?

Try: http://www.readerair.co.uk/index.shtml

Alternatively check with your local dealer to supply you with more information regarding the following part number; A463 830 10 60, this is for an air conditioner parts kit for subsequent installation. To me it sounds like a retro fit kit, but I am not certain of this.

I do not think this conversion will be cheap, so another option could be is to fit air conditioning as fitted to vans, but have that unsightly unit stuck on the roof of the vehicle.

Check out the suppliers who fit for motorhomes and vans, there are a few shown on this page.

Knew an ex-MB tech who fitted that kit once to a G and he didn't have fond memories of the experience, says it was a proper pain.

I also had one fitted in a 460, what a ballach! I ended up fitting a loose casette type unit under the dash, in front of the gear lever, and a sandard MB pump. Much cheaper, faily cool and never gave me any problems.

Re: Retro Fit Air Conditioning?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Rakesh, I'll check into the part number and see what I can find out. The company you mentioned was also one I found in my search. Thank you.

PP, I'll send Shakir a PM and see if he is still active.

At the moment, lack of A/C is a deal breaker for me; however, if I can find an aftermarket solution, it will open up the market for me.

"Try: http://www.readerair.co.uk/index.shtml"

In case someone finds this thread in the future, I spoke with Reader Air and they don't do many passenger cars any longer and certainly not the G Wagen.

Re: Retro Fit Air Conditioning?

Thanks Roly. I am also looking into another solution in the UK.

Again, for the sake of future reference, the part number that Rakesh mentioned:

"Alternatively check with your local dealer to supply you with more information regarding the following part number; A463 830 10 60, this is for an air conditioner parts kit for subsequent installation. To me it sounds like a retro fit kit, but I am not certain of this."

Was quoted at £5067.00 + VAT when I spoke with Mercedes parts; of course, you have the cost of fitting on top.

I have another route to look into and will add to this thread if/when I find a more affordable solution.

Re: Retro Fit Air Conditioning?

If you are based around london I would at least talk to these people about it. I dont think there is much they dont know about aircon and are a well run family business. Mark4 01753 696944 http://mark4.co.uk/

Re: Retro Fit Air Conditioning?

I think these would look OK, mounted in the roof and sprayed to colour match.
http://www.obrienscamping.co.uk/air_conditioners.htm

They are probably too large for a G - what is the cooling output of a factory fitted Air Con unit?  2,000 BTU/hr?

Not sure I would want to cut a whole in the roof though - rather have the previously mentioned cartridge style blower under the dash ontop of the centre console, wiring the pump into the engine compartment and running any pipes through the bulkhead?  Any pics of such a fitting?

Mirage Air, London

On my W461 gd290, 1994 lwb I had A/C installed by Mirage Air...I had found a thread in GWOA about them..

very pleased...spend less than 1.500£, all included: installation and parts (BEHR, original German parts).

Being a W461 it has the same dash as the W460, hence only way was to install a unit under the heating controls, blowing air basically only in the center of the car. Very cold air, though.

Cheap and very good solution.

I had inquired and they do  W463 as well.

Cheers, e.

Re: Retro Fit Air Conditioning?

Thank you to all those who have contributed to this thread.

As soon as I have found a G-Wagen to purchase, I will investigate the various options further. What my preliminary search has allowed me to do is widen my remit for a G-purchase to all SWB 463s, not simply those with factory fit A/C.

Re: Retro Fit Air Conditioning?

Just thought I'd update some details for W460 onwards G Aircon. I just spoke to Mirage Air and they have a new email address. The can supply parts for factory systems on newer G's and knew about the aftermarket type fitted to my W460. I need a new condenser/radiator. They can supply all the bits but need the size of it and maybe a photo.

New details 18/9/12

Re: Retro Fit Air Conditioning?

A lot of good advice here... cheapest can be done DIY...you need  bracket and compressor to go on engine [have 2 or 3 s/hand] condensor rads are easy to source and an aftermarket underdash unit and a filter assy...your local shop can plumb it up and gas it....less than £1000....any retro fit to factory type is a major project and could be ££££++
