Enging over heated, went into a house, got bottle of water, opened bonnet, released pressure on rad cap, opened too soon, blasted with jet of boiling water straight in face, poured bottle of water on face, ran into the nice lady's house, head under tap for half hour, ambulance came, shot of morphine, gel on face, nose peeled. How lucked am I. Never ever ever do that!

Yes it's a thing you only do once.
If you gotta open it when it's hot - use a big heavy rag over cap to catch the steam and water and open very slowly.
