Shiny wheel bolts!
I'm having new tyres fitted all round (if I can get the old rusted bolts out!). Currently I have standard bolts with nasty plastic covers. I'd like to fit nice shiny s/s bolts. Does anyone know what size the bots are, I'm guessing M14, and where I might get nice shiny ss bolts.
Thanks folks
Hi
many of the fancy alloy/chrome wheel specialists have all sorts of bolts in bright metal
just make sure the length hardness and thread are compatible
I would only use bolts from MB. Too many cheap materials around.
I stand to be corrected, but I think you will struggle to find stainless steel wheel bolts as discounting exotic alloys (Titanium, iconell etc) I don't think stainless steel alone will be of a high enough strength.
For instance, the only 304 and 316 stainless metric bolts I have seen are rated at 700 or 800 MPa (800Mpa is the equivalent of an '8.2' regular steel bolt). AFAIK, wheel bolts are generally 10.9 steel - some 30% more, designed to take significantly more preload and stress.
When I get a moment, I plan to have a go at parkerising some steel wheelbolts (bath of manganese phosphate and acid cooked up on the gas hob when my wife is out of town, LOL) which I'll report back on here.
PS. In the event that ss bolts are non runner, has anyone any experience of ss lug nut covers?
Thanks again.
