I am trying to remove the shaft with the universal joints, and it is appears as though I need to remove the rest of the shaft coming from the steering wheel first. Can anyone comment please on how to proceed?

Thanks
Adrian

Re: Steering column shaft removal

Hi remove the pinch bolts out of each end and put WD40 on both splined ends.... after an hour you should be able to tap the shaft down or up until one end comes of the spline ---normally at the steering box end......

Re: Steering column shaft removal

Thanks Fixwin,
The steering box end is loose, but the shaft will not shorten sufficiently for the steering shaft to withdraw off the steering box spline. That is why I am wondering if the steering wheel shaft (6) needs to be moved.
The trouble I find is that with an old car, you sometimes don't know if something is obstinately stuck - by design, or through corrosion!

Re: Steering column shaft removal

Hi
if you can see spline grooves on the steering box side and spline on the column shaft with some WD 40 the piece you want to remove should slide off one end or the other.with a little persuasion!!!  the pinch bolts must be removed totally to allow this to happen ..just out of curiosity why are you removing  this piece ??? if it is so worn on the crosses you can possibly drive out  a cross section which will allow you to remove the shaft

Re: Steering column shaft removal

Aha!, maybe that is my problem - the pinch bolts are still in place.

Yes the reason I am removing is the UJs are worn out. This is non-serviceable so I have sourced another shaft. Of course I could cut the old one out, but the new still has to get in.

Tonight i will remove those pinch bolts entirely.

Regards, Adrian

Remove trim round key  and other side + rubber from stalk , two bolts on clamp now visible then one bolt on pedal box , you can now tap up column and change shaft .

Steering shaft is now free!

Tony, thanks for that information, it will come in handy later.
