Sticking brake pedal.

The brake pedal on my 1993 300GEL auto does not return to the normal position after I press it.

I have pressure at the pedal and the brakes work fine. The pedal remains in the depressed position after I remove my foot from it and the brakes remain on until I pull the pedal back up.

Any ideas what might be causing this ?

Hello bigblock,

Try lubricating the pedals firstly, then look for any bushings collapsing in the pivot shaft, is the return spring O K?

Cheers,

Re: Sticking brake pedal.

Hi There, i have the same problem on my 1992 300GD manual. The clutch and brake pedal were sticking together, managed to free the clutch with some wd on the shaft, however the brake seems to be sticking still and i have to lift off with my foot from underneath the pedal. could it be a master cylinder problem?

Hi
water from leaks around the windscreen area (spindles... seal. or metal frame) can corrode the pedal hard points to the extent you need to strip the assembly out of the car  disassemble derust and liberally grease with a good quality grease... springs can decay and lose effectiveness if rusty so new springs if that is the case .........also stop the the water leaks or this problem will re occur in the fulness of time

Re: Sticking brake pedal.

Thanks for all of the replies. I suspect that water ingress had caused the shaft from the pedal into the brake cylinder to start to seize.

I was able to peel back the rubber gater where the shaft from the pedal passes through the bulkhead and spray a large amount of WD40 along it. After working the pedal vigourously back and forth numerous times and a repeat spray of WD40 I was able to get the pedal to return from the depressed position on its own.

As Fixwin has pointed out the real solution is to stop the water leak (where ever that might be) which will prevent the problem from re-occuring.

Re: Sticking brake pedal.

Well done lads, job done. got it unstuck, had to move the return spring lower on the brake pedal arm just to take the pedal up last little bit. feels much better to drive now.

thanks for your help
