Vibration under load

The G passed its test yesterday, which was good news, however I am getting a lot of vibration when driving, mainly at lower speed.

I have always had some slight vibration when setting off in 2WD, usually only for a minute or so, then it settled down.

However recently in 4WD I am getting heavy vibration through the transfer box and steering. It only eases off, when I am slowing down, or not underload.

When I switch back to 2WD it is still there, but not as heavy. It is far worse than it used to be.

The G had been in the garage for 6 months on a SORN, until a couple of days ago. Could something have seized?

Any suggestions as to what to check first?

Thanks

Re: Vibration under load

Hi
check propshaft crosses for rust and lack of grease ....pump them all (6 nipples) until they ooze the new clean grease then put six pumps of grease in each sliding section ( 3 nipples) use a good grease like Multimotive GB 2 from ELF or similar spec from other lubricant manufacturers...if badly worn/corroded the grease will reduce the vibration for around 500 miles ..new crosses can be bought for GBP 60 + vat "not from MB".....fitting them is the harder /more expensive part..check the front end of the front axle for wear first..

Thanks, will try this tomorrow and report back. (If I can get out, snowed in at the moment)

Re: Vibration under load

Everything greased and a great improvement, although I could not get grease into one of the nipples at the very front.

Any suggestions as to how to remove the old grease, which I assume is blocking any new grease going in?

Re: Vibration under load

Hi
there is a ball bearing in the end of each grease nipple ..try prodding it free....if no luck switch the grease nipples around and pump in grease until it oozes out the same colour as the grease you put in.....***Note! the improvement will only be temporary  (1000miles) if the "crosses" are badly worn/corroded which means new "crosses" will  help solve the problem completely.....

Re: Vibration under load

Switched the nipples around, which worked at treat.

I can now see that the smallest propshaft has quite a bit of movement on one of the UJ's.

Is it  just a case of undoing all the bolts and removing?

Is it worth replacing the whole assembly, or just having the ends replaced?

Thanks

Hi
New shafts from MB cost GBP 800 + each...check "on-line" or yellow pages for drive shaft overhaulers...if they have problems getting the new "UJ"s  (MB do not supply them as a repair kit ) I have them @ GBP 75 per end + postage....
