VIN number

I have just been to see a 1992 300d which has a vin number that does not match the license plate number according to the AA check. Looking at a message on GWOA which explained the make up of VINs it would appear that this G should have been a left hand drive where in fact it is a RHD. Any ideas?
Also other worries are that the roof light leaks a lot ruined roof lining and causing mildew on insides. There is oil leaking somewhere just behind the engine sump. Loud rattle from the rocker cover nearest to the engine bulkhead. Oil leak and rattle needs more investigation as too much oil to see precisely the source and rattle noises tend to be hard to trace.
Any thoughts on records or condition of vehicle?
