What does the small saucer shaped object on top of the exhaust manifold do? There is a vacumn connection from it  to the top front of the engine. What are the problems if it does not work as it is rusty and loose.

Thanks in antisipation

Hello Panzer,

Most probably you refer to the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve. It's purpose is to allow the exhaust gases back to the intake side (for emissions related reasons). The EGR valve is vacuum operated. The vacuum connection should end up onto a themrostatically controlled valve element (essentially a two port valve which allows 'vacuum' to pass through only when hot). EGR valves do tend to get rusty and sticky over years. You could completely isolate the EGR valve without any noticeable negative consequences - you should think of the environment though!!
