Hi, guys. Joined the Club now and G Wizz is excellent source of info and beats all the other car, classic and 4X4 comics I buy regurlarly. My A reg 280GE (sourced ten months ago through this web-site,thanks particularly to Tim Carnell and Merc dealers in Coldstream, thanks again) is used every day and a typical week's travelling can take in a dozen or so counties and Wales/Scotland. So terrific is the engine but so is it's thirst for petrol.
I have the chance of a well maintained, but rusty, 300 D auto (B reg) with 5 cyl OM 617 engine. Will the diesel engine, and box, from this car fit in my G and if so what mods/changes will I need to make. My G is in very good condition bodily and mechanically having only covred 95 K.
I know it will be slow but that's fine as my licence is "points loaded anyhow" .
Thanks
Andy Jones.

280 GE auto conversion to OM617 from 300 D auto saloon ?

I've got the 617 engine from a car fitted to my G so it's definitely possible. Not sure about the box though, my guess is that more knowledgeable people than me will be able to advise. Be sure to fit it with new 463 engine mounts rather than the old donut shaped ones as these lift the engine about an inch or so and will enable the axle to clear the sump when off roading.

One bonus is that my G is a lot perkier with the car engine in than normal G diesels i've driven, I've been told this is cos it's a higher compression engine but whether this is true or i just have a v good engine i can't be sure. Maybe someone can clarify?
