Before I pull it apart to replace a rust tank guard, can someone tell me if I can remove the guard without dropping the tank?

Has anyone swapped to a later plastic tank? what's involved?

Cheers Andy

With mine when replacing the tank, I dropped the guard and my friend held the tank in place whilst I slid the jack in underneath to hold it. This was only possible for 2 things; firstly the tank was very empty and secondly, I have the secondary tanks in the rear quarter panels so the hoses provided a bit of support to it as well.
Dont forget to unplug the battery before you start!

Thanks for getting back to me.

I was hoping the guard could be removed without touching the tank.

Does the tank bolt to the guard or sit upon it?

Anyone strengthened the standard guard or are the mountings too weak for an 'offroad' version?

Regards A.

The tank sits on the guard, the two straps hold the lot together. The tank is fairly light once empty so it is possible to hold it in place while removing the guard, but to be honest if the guard is rusty the tank will be too. You'd be better off removing the tank for a close inspection and at the least a lick of paint. To remove the tank you need to disconnect the fuel pump and return pipes (behind an inspection cover on the forward edge of the tank guard) and the level sender and breather pipe (accessible from inside the car via a small square cover in the floor)
