Had a G owner call in with steering problems, had a new steering damper fitted on vacation in France, he experienced some very nasty moments when steering jammed after turning left.
I found the following.
A. The damper fitted was 2nd hand.
B. it was much to fat>
C. when steering turned to left the damper was jamming against the track rod.
This is not the first case of this and it arises because you can no longer get the correct damper for a 460. the 463 replacement needs a modified bracket when fitted to the 460. :x

Whats the score then with the 463 damper as I was going to fit one to my 460 ???

That's not what you told me. What's the score on that G you sold me then? The damper is definitely fitted the other way round to OEM 460.

The damper fitted to this vehicle and I am discussing this vehicle specificaly isn't even from a G or even a merceds if you go to the US forum you will see a pic and undestand the problem.
The damper on your G is perfectly ok.
I have watched your various posts with interest, if you have a beef take it up with me personaly, if you don't like the vehicle now, selll it,

The threads went like this

No it 's worse.

Now that is not what you've told me. I've been to the US forum and seen the damper there, but the quotes above and they're the ones i'm replying to do not refer to that specific vehicle or damper but to 463 dampers fitted to 460 vehicles.

I've watched your various posts with interest too and very often the information you post does not tie up with what you have told me in person.

I'm more than happy to talk with you personally about anything to do with the G, but this is a free speech forum these are my opinions and i'll post what i like within the forum rules. If you don't like it lump it.

Grahem dixon and marcus come on join in we got another fight in here now. :? .

In Bill defense eliot I think your wires are crossed as Bill explained. When you purchase the damper for a 460, you will be supplied with the 463 damper and the bracket to match and you can fit either way round. But like Bill says the one in question was not G related.

Well, I spose it depends how you interpret things. My interpretation was that the last line of Bills thread was a general comment about how 463 dampers fit 460 G's and that your reply PP was in relation to that i.e they need to be turned the other way cos the 463 damper is fatter than OEM 460. The " no that makes it worse " comment made me concerned that having a 463 damper fitted the wrong way round on my G will eventually result in a similar issue so i asked the question. I guess i missed the point though.

To clarify.
You cannot get a genuine 460 damper any more, in the EPC it cross refers to a 463 PN but you must fit the modifying bracket if it hasnt all ready been done, once done it doesnt matter which way round the damper is fitted.
But the lack of a 460 damper causes people to go else where and fit a damper based on length and stroke, and the result is often as seen, far to fat a damper fitted without the realisation that as you turn the steering the damper moves closer to and eventually contacts the track rod causing binding.
It would be safer under these circumstances to drive without one.
