Having recently viewed a ‘91 463, I have come to the conclusion that if I want a shinny looking new G I will have to go for a lhd from Germany, 2000 or newer. A 14-year old vehicle is just that, and baring the rare exceptions to this rule, will come with all the miles, dings and rust that one would expect with a vehicle of that age which has been in regular use. The only one I know that differs from this is a ‘92 which is only used now and again and does not carry children etc.

My question is – I understand that Gs used to go to AMG for the interior etc to be fitted, but this changed in about 2000/01, does anyone know the exact date. Is it the case that you can tell because the dash changed? Did all Gs go to AMG or just the G500s? I saw a 300GTD and it did not look as if it was the AMG interior, cloth seats etc.

270 with leather etc now looks good, lots of torque, same G body, cheaper, no G500 rumble – well you can’t have everything.

It would only be one off's that went to AMG for a bit of tarting up. Most are straight from the factory, leather would be standard on top models 500 upwards, and an option on the lower models 300TD's etc..
The dash changed in for 01 models,

Thanks

I was under the impression that all the older 500s went to AMG to have the interiors fitted. I read on a US website that all the quality problems came from MB taking the interiors in-house.

How did you get the photos below, don’t say you they are both yours!

Yes, one's my week day run about, the other is for weekends, I WISHED

Nabbed the pictures from http://www.mobile.de easiest way to show the two interiors.

As far as i know quality problems are mainly to do with over complicated electrics / computer systems that appeared on later models. All Mercs, not just the G's

I have just spoken to MB regarding importing one. They told me that I will need to replace the speedo if it is not duel marked. Does anyone know if it is, and if not, how much this will cost?

It is single marked, but it shouldn't be to much of a problem as all US G's are fitted with MPH clocks....
