How do you change the headlight bulbs? I imagine it's a case of removing the headlight casing on the front from looking under the bonnet???

I thought I should ask before applying my heavy hands and braking something much to the delight of my local MB spares dept.

In terms of replacement bulb can I upgrade without melting anything? I have a '98 LHD G500 if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance

Changing headlight bulbs???

if this relates to the 280GE, hmm i was too young to change a light bulb when we had 1 of them, however...
if it's for a G500, then you need to lower the bullbar (if fitted, using the tool normally found in the glove compartment if you're lucky!), then look underneath the headlight surround, you'll find two screws (might need some extra light shining in there) which you can undo if you insert a phillips screwdriver into those holes. With practise you'll find you don't need to undo the screws fully, just to loosen them enough to be able to lift the surround VERTICALLY upwards then away from the vehicle. You almost definitely have headlight washers, so the hose for that will need some pulling (gently) to free the surround completely from the plastic tabs underneath it, but once free you can let it dangle (but i take no responsibility) by that tube as it should be strong enough.
Proceed to remove the screws from around the glass that hold it to the body (I think 3), and NOT the ones that are for vertical/horizontal adjustment. That will give you access to the rear of the H4 dome, then it should be straightforward to remove the old bulb and fit the new one, after disconnecting the electric hookup at the rear.
Try not to forget the black rubber surround that goes around the glass, before you fit the plastic body-coloured piece back, and try not to touch the bulb glass with bare fingers (like it says on the box!).

hope that's useful.
ps. philips blue vision lightbulbs look good at night, even at standard wattage.

I went for the halogen...

Thanks, your instructions were perfect. It wasn't the bulbs that was the problem just corroded connections which surprised seeing it looks like it's never been near a puddle???

Changing headlight bulbs???

glad they were spot-on! it might have been condensation from hot/cold cycles, but at least a bulb is cheap to replace, if the connectors are still ok.

stay illuminated!
