Hello guys and girl (or two) of the G Wagen-Forum

After using this site for a LOT of references over several months, I finally joined the forum! Better late than never…
The info on this site have been invaluable and I have helped a lot of guys in SA with some of the advice posted on this site.

Intro: I am a South-African (another one) living in the UK (London) and have been here for about 4 years now. I grew up back 'home' with G's, my Dad bought our first one when I was about 6 years old ('83) and we have had 5 since then -All 460/1 models- and he is currently driving a G270 461 (2001/2 - I think - MB-SA never imported 463 models to South-Africa - although there are some private imports). I grew up with all sorts of 4x4's and have been on countless Safari's up in Africa, my Dad ran a company taking tourists on these trip's and we had sponsor vehicles ranging from Toyota's (Hilux and Cruisers) to Land-Rovers (Defenders and Disco's), he ALWAYS had his G though. Time after time all the other vehicles got stuck or had some sort of trouble and the G always bailed them out, ALWAYS! So therein lies my firm belief that there is NO better 4x4 - I had years of first hand experience.

I am a fully certified 4x4 instructor and taught Jeep, Land-Rover, Toyota, MB, Nissan... owners how to fully appreciate what their vehicles are capable of, as many of them over there end up the same as here - doing the school run - a shame really... seeing they live in beautiful big Africa!

I bought my first one about 8 months ago, from one of your forum users (Carl). Was very happy and could not stop sending pictures home (VERY proud to be a owner - at last!!) Unfortunately the wool was pulled over my eyes and I am still fixing problems on the car, (I paid £7000 for a '91 300GE 463 - which was a real good price...) since then I have spent over £2500 on parts and labour, learned my lesson and will think twice before going through the same thing again! (Thinking of buying another one soon for my wife - also a big fan) Well with the bad comes the good, ownership of a great car.

The G is not currently running - again - due to a intermediate cut out of the engine while driving and I have found what I think might be the problem on the site - again. There was a post that the owner of a G280 made (or his Dad's) that describes the same thing I am experiencing, and I think it was Peter that pointed out that it might be the fuel pump relay or the fuel filter, so I will be changing them over the weekend. -If I can locate where they are!

Well this I think might be the longest post ever on the site, I got carried away a bit - sorry!

This started as a BIG THANK YOU to the guys making this site possible (I hope that you guys have read the post up to this part) and all the help everyone had/has given me in maintaining one of the best cars in the world.

Please keep up the great work, everyone's advice/efforts is really appreciated.

Regards

Need yor help guys

David

Thanks a lot for that and I will be honoured to contribute to the mag.

I am in a bind at the moment though, I know a bit about off-roading, but am not a keen mechanic or auto electrician. In my first post I mentioned that I need to replace the fuel pump relay and/or fuel pump. I have no guide to point me in the right direction, please could somebody explain what the relay looks like (I gathered that all the fuses and relays are located underneath the passenger side of the dashboard), cause there are quite a number of them there!

Thanks and regards

Here's to a great site!

the fuel pump relays on the 460 are behind the fuse panel which is drivers side footwell area, you had to pull down fuse panel and the relay is behind there(280 and 230). The relays are also the rev limiter so if yoy find a large relay that says 6500rpm or near that mark then that will be it. Not sure where thay are on the 463 but start there then take out glove box and look behind there. For you info fuel pmups are in rear nearside wheel arch, you have to take off inner arch lining to access them. There is two pumps, one is a limp home pump if the main one fails. Fuel filter is on rear nearside chassis rail below the accumulator.

Found it

Thanks Peter.
Done it the good old fashioned way; starting the car and pulling out relay's till the car died, and voila, found the fuel pump relay (phoned a Merc mechanic and said that it would not damage the car and the only relay that would cut the engine is the fuel pump relay). It would of course be the BIGGEST relay and the most obvious, but better to be 100% sure.

Also a handy tip for G-owners to use if they experience the same problem:
If you look at the relay (bottom part) you can see two 'pins' marked as 15 and 87, to find out what causes the cut out (relay or filter) and which one to replace: bridge those two pins with a copper wire and drive a SHORT distance to see if the problem persists, if it does not - replace the relay. If it continues, replace the fuel filter.

Cheers
