Okay guys been lusting after a G wagen as a tow car and found the following

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WWW/CARS_popup.asp?modelexact=1&lid=sea...

Now what bothers me is according to what i can read there is no turbo diesel in this model. i am off to look at it tomorrow and see what it is like. But any thoughts on the car would be appreciated.

Re: Thoughts on this

Hi Thinforth,

Spot on, no Turbo for this model (In LHD only). After Market add ons offered from TB Turbos and STT. Some members, more knowledgable than I, have concerns on the strength of the non-turbo om617 engine, i.e. its' suitability.

The original 617a (Turboed and offered in LHD) had considerablely stronger components than its normally aspirated cousin.

As for the vehicle on sale, it is fair to say that it is near the top of the price range for a SWB 460 Series. It would need to be in great order internally as well as externally to warrant this price.

If you are new to the Marque, have someone go with you.

Good luck in your search.

Re: Thoughts on this

Is there anyone up here in the wilds of scotland.

Anyway i shall go see today if i like it but probably not going to buy it until i look more thoroughly into these vehicles.

Basically looking for a bombproof, depreciation proof, mechanically simple, decent towcar. Would this be a g wagen

Oh my god is it slow quite shockingly slow but i did drive to go see it in a full race caterham 7

So too slow for my tastes and it is not in what i would call excellent condition the seats are tatty and the bodywork starting to show signs of tin worm.

Re: Thoughts on this

Hi Tinforth,

Glad to see sense prevailed!!. Foneman is right, too costly for a non-minter.

Be aware though that this model G was never a fast car. If it is performance you want and in the ball park for this price - then you are going to have to consider petrol, i.e. 280GE.

It will tick all your boxes re construction, depreciation etc, and you will find there is a greater choice out there.

Fuel consumption? Big ouch, especially when towing. Some LPG beginning to creep onto marketplace - may be worth checking them out.

Good luck on the search - keep looking on the Forum and seeking opinions, most G's for sale are known to us.
