Hi I hear that the wheel bearings on the G (280GE in this case) are prone to wear and need replacing at frequent intervals.

Does anyone have enxperience as to how much this can cost?

Obviously I know it depends on the garage where you have it done but I'm just looking for a ballpark price.

Also are there any ways of knowing that the bearing are shot? any noises while driving etc?

Main reason is i'm looking at a G to but at the moment and dont know when it last had its bearings changed so need to know before I buy just incase!!!

Cheers

Dan

Re: Wheel Bearings

I bought all the bearings (very high quality Japanese) Mercedes are selling Hungarian ones of somewhat dubious quality – so I have heard - for the front axel, the cost was about £24 check ( http://www.gwoa.co.uk/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=855 ) You would just need to get the seals from Mercedes.

You also need a special socket to undo and thighten the hub nut - regular workshops won't have one. Dont go to Mercedes to do it - not just an arm and leg but the whole chair! Its not a difficult job just something that needs doing every 100,000 miles or so - dont let it put you off.
They will wear out more quickly if you have biger wider tyres and wheels that have a greater offset than standard (stick out from the hub more)

I have not done it yet as mine are still ok – fingers crossed.

To check the bearings jack up each side and attempt to waggle the wheel from side to side gently and see if you can notice any slight free movement between the wheel and the hub. If you get a AA or RAC check done they will tell you. You can also take it for an MOT, quite a cheap way of checking the condition of bearings and steering etc.

As for noise when driving – if it’s got that far you would need to act quickly as it will cause damage.

If you have vibration thru the steering wheel at certain speeds it likely to be the steering damper – very simple fix.

Try sending a PM to Bill Moss on this forum as he as workshop in Rugby and does a lot of work on Gs - he could tell you the rough cost of replacement.

Re: Wheel Bearings

Just done front wheel bearings in a spare hour at work, bearings roughly £20(ish) each, seals roughly £ 10(ish) each so roughly £60 for parts each side. Would suggest that you renew the locking tab washer at the same time, your talking pence for that.
If you are in the Upton on severn area of Worcestershire on a sat morn, will help you fit then at my garage.

Midnight motors in Wembley sell the compelte kit with seals for around £28 quid. My lorry mechanics did both front in 1.5 hrs @ £35 an hour.

Suggest you dont get your hands dirty in that case dan, take the bronzed bargain hunter`s advice & go to wembley. you can get some rolling stones tickets while you are there unless the bargain hunter knows of a better source? we are all after a good deal!
make sure you take your game boy with you to the guru`s lorry mech as garage waiting rooms are very much like doctors waiting rooms, out of date magazines that are of no interest to anyone under90!
