So much chat about off road tyres but none on road tyres[or i'm not looking at the right posts].

So i've got some nobbly ish tyres on 15''alloys.I think they are 31.10.5R15.

What is the best ROAD tyre. They don't need to be as wide as the ones i've got but i guess they can't be too different because of the alloy rims, the existing height seems about right but maybe a bit taller wouldn't hurt or does that enter the realm of oversize tyre and oversize wallet required?.Don't want to change the rims cause they're pretty cool.Cheers Nick

Re: DOES ANYONE USE THEIR G ON ROAD?

G on the black stuff !
Good afternoon Nick, Yes I use my G (1984 460 lwb) almost every day on the tarmac and have travelled approx 20,000 miles since last June. Mixed motorway,A roads and country lanes generally and up until three or four months ago the original 15" alloys wore All Terrains (Goodyear I think) and when they needed replacing I took her into my regular tyre dealers in Melksham Wiltshire, who are always first rate, and asked if they could find quality tyres that were better suited to road use. After a bit of research they recommended Avon Ranger tyres that were duly fitted. After a few thousand miles I can say these tyres sit the G on the road much better and I am positive it handles better than before with improved grip in all conditions on the road and with a bit of warning before "sideways style" movement occurs !
Profile is wider so there must be more rubber width on the road whilst the overall circumference is a bit less than previous tyres so top speed is less but I must be safer travelling past Gordon Brown's cash machines dotted at the side of our roads. Hope this helps and if you need more info let me know.
Cheers
Andy Jones.

Re: DOES ANYONE USE THEIR G ON ROAD?

only had BFG all terrains on a G, in excess of 60,000 and still tread on them, long term I would go for those,my experience anyway. Have driven other 4x4's on Kuhmos (Daewoo Mussos) and firestone (Hyundai) and quite frankly, my arse is still aching from clenched buttocks

Re: DOES ANYONE USE THEIR G ON ROAD?

On the subject of BFG A/T's, how are they on the road? I'm seriously thinking of changing the current 205/80/16's to something more like 265/xx/16, but i'm not sure how they would be for road use, specially in the rain or snow. Any words of wisdom from 60k of experience?

BFG A/t a great for road use and light off roading, no problems in the wet towing a 3.5t trailer either. I only started having trouble in the wet when I went for a M/T when towing and braking up to roundabouts, t use to flivk it into 4wd on my 460 which helped the braking. BFG are worth every penny in my book.

Re: DOES ANYONE USE THEIR G ON ROAD?

I'm planning to put BFG mud on for my African trip. On my other G I'm running Colway mud, FANTASTIC!!! The Colways stick like s!#t to a blanket on wet roads, but the downside is you only get around 30,000ml from them, but then again @ £45 VS £130 the Colway is a good buy. They look good as well. 245/70/16 is the one to get for standard G alloys.

Re: DOES ANYONE USE THEIR G ON ROAD?

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I will go for the BFG a/t after all. Though not sure about sizes, BFG themselves recommend no more than 245 on the 6" alloy rims, while most tire fitters will fit the 265 and say it's no problem, and I've seen Michelin LTX m/s in 265 fitted on the narrow 6" rim, and it didn't look half bad! I like the extra flex in the sidewall for those inevitable curbing/kerbing moments.
Best price so far around £117/tyre off the 'net, 130 fitted. Will check with a few others and see if that's competitive.
