Installing factory air con into a non-air con 460

Just bought a 85 460 that has no air con. Like to add the factory air con by using parts from other MB models or even Gwagen if I can find them. Has anyone attempted this before? Any thoughts?

I know about the after market independent system being sold out of Texas, bit too rich for my blood at over $2000.

Did this fit into the original installation space, or was it an after-market type that had it's own structure?

this is a completly independent system than the vehicles heating system.
seperate blower, controls, etc. i have a japanese compressor that they fir to land rovers as well. vents are under the dash seperate. i have to say it is very efficient. too cold sometimes.!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks- sounds interesting, but would prefer something operating through existing vents (agree the Japanese compressors are much more efficient and reliable). Good to hear that things work well your way, howver.

I did a bit of research and found that an aftermarket aircon is definitely the way to go on a 460. The people in South Africa all have aircons, for obvious reasons. They even remove the MB aircon because they are not efficient. If you still insist on a MB one, hang around, the do pop up now and then, I might even sell you the one from my 300 TD. (I’m going to sell the car.)

Can't agree more on the 460, but I thought they were ok on the 463. O well, everything about a 463 can't be perfect.

Funny, 'coz at the current 36º I am feeling quite well inside my G! (sort of!)

In my opinion, most aircons are badly used and badly maintained but if you do both things properly they tend to work quite well.

The problem I see in the 463 is the insufficient number of vents, the air coming from the central ones is freezing

Re: Factory air con conversion

I am being asked by the great and inexorable powers above to advise if my 88 LWB 280 was originally gassed with the newer type of refrigerant 9and not Freon).
Does anyone know when Mercedes changed the coolant used in the G Wagen to the latter environmentally friendly system and attendant coolant type?
