255/85/16
At the moment I use Colway 245/70/16 mud terain on standard 460 alloys with no problems. I am on my second set and havn't had a sidewall punture yet.
The Colways are great for mud but they cut up terrible when I went offroading in the alps where it was very rocky.
I am considering to put 255/85/16 BFG on, but do not no if they will fit. has anybody tried it?
Do you mean 235/85-16?
I think they are a commonly fitted size.
I've got 235/85 16s on standard 16x 5.5 and they are a little 'fat'. the recomended wheel is a 16x6 . My tyres are goodyear wrangler mt/r and I couldn't recomend them highly enough though they do dig a bit in very soft sand. Also have a set of 31x10.5 on 15x7 alloys which have been abbused in mud, rock and at 12psi on fech fech without a single puncture in 40,000 miles.
Having said all that a friend has just come back from Libia having bent ( iretrievably) a 16 inch alloy, though it didn't break - he was on michelin XS but it was lucky he had a spare spare. 235x85 16s are pretty much the same size as a 7.50 16 which is available anywhere in africa and a big hammer and an inner tube will get you home
I am using 235/85R16 BFG Track Edges on 6x16 standard 463 alloys and are generally very pleased with this size. I shall move to Mud Terrains with the next change, though.
You'll have trouble getting that size in Africa and odd-size tyres are going to eat up your diffs/drivetrain.
Yes, you can get nearly any size in SA, but the important bit is "inbetween" here and there. If you want wider than 235/85R16, then get the 265/75R16. Circumference is the same as the 235s but a bit wider.
I am going to fit the 255's I will let you know if it works. It is a bit of an expensive experiment though, if they fit the tyre I have to pay for it.
