HELP NEEDED ON 603 ENGINE
I have for financial reasons sold my 230 GE Cabrio lhd which i kept in North Cyprus to my brother. I had planned a major conversion with the help of a fellow GWOA member but now cancelled it sadly.Maybe one day i will fulfill my dream, well now my brother has found a diesel engine and has asked me to find out what this engine is. The engine number is:60397112014765.many thanks .
603.971 sounds a lot like a OM603D35A as fitted to the "American only" W126 350 SDL (this one is fitted with a 603.970). In any event I would bet that it is a OM603D35A as fitted to the W140 S350TD and W463 G350TD.
Has it got a turbo fitted?
Then it's got 136-143 BHP and 305 Nm of torque.
But easy to improve by fitting an intercooler
Whether it's a good engine or not depends on the year of manufacture.
Up to 1993 they had severe cooling problems due to the design of the engine head which were solved with a redesign for the MY 1994.
Either way, the intercooler might improve things by providing coller inlet air and thus reducing the working temperature of the engine.
I have heard of users having the older version of this engine not having problems by not abusing the engine at all.
But most autobahn driving in Germany has ended in tears. This is probably the most unreliable old fashioned diesel Mercedes ever.
So up to you then
... and yes, my surname is Fernandez
305 Nm @ 1,800 rpm
Huss55,
I used "www.convert-me.com", it gives 305 Nm as equivalent to 225 foot lbs.
Cheers,
And yes Jesus, I was informed recently by someone who is well experienced that intercooling should help to off-set problems caused by "turboing", this was for the 617 engine. All things in moderation of course.

Firstly thanks for your reply, yes it does have a turbo but my brother is eager to learn the performance aspect of the engine like bhp and torque figures. Many thanks!
