Unfortunately my engine will not switch off on the key :? , although the engine speed drops and it id very easy to stop it by letting out the clutch.
What has failed?Tried to get to both ends of the vacume pipe but unable to /unsure how to get to it at the ignition key.Or has that device on the pump failed. Can you repair them with new seals etc?Stops fine on the manual stop lever on the pump.
Any advice appreciated :

Just had the same problem with mine, turns out to be the vacum shut off, a new one cost me £41.00 plus 2 hours labour, seemed reasonable.

Is this Vacum shut off on top of the injection pump? Was your engine a bit slow to turn off at first?

The vacuum shut-off is beneath the ignition lock. All your symptoms are exactly the same I had and it was the vacuum shut-off. It is a very common occurence

You need to remove the steering wheel. For this you need to prise the Mercedes star badge at the centre with a bold flat screwdriver (and a bit of care so that you do not pierce the wheel cushion). Then you will see the nut that holds the wheel for which I think you need a 27 mm socket key. From there I think that it is just unding screws and removing a couple of trim parts. But before this, I would make sure that the vacuum lines have no leaks whatsoever...
