New Member & a Request
My nane is Mike and I am a Brit expat living in the UAE - Dubai. I own a 1999 G500 and regularly take it off road, both in the soft sand and the mountains. It's never, ever let me down and has been a tug for many a stuck Land Cruiser, Pajero etc... I used to get the local Merc garage to service it but after getting a WIS and being ripped off I now do it all myself. EG, my a/c stopped working, Merc garage spotted leak and asked for 10,000 dihrams to repair. I took out the radiator, got it repaired and recharged for 380 dihrams.
I am returning to the UK in October and hope to take some parts back with me (ironically I have purchased Merc parts in the UK before as they were cheaper than in this tax free haven!). My first question on the forum is that I am on the lookout for some Bilstein/ Koni/OME shocks to buy in the UK. Could somebody please point me to the cheapest supplier?
Thanks,
Mike.

A very belated welcome to the club! I got bilsteins once from an online retailer (I think eurocarparts.co.uk or gsfcarparts.com) for the rear, pretty dear (about £80 each?), then for the fronts I went for slightly cheaper Quinton Hazell parts, which have the advantage over the bilsteins of having the metal sleeve around the strut rather than a plastic one http://www9.qha.com/uk/brands/lipmesa.htm
http://www9.qha.com/uk/technical/othercatalogues.htm#lipmesa
I'd be interested to know what indy you went for before starting to do the work yourself (Mars Garage?), and also bear in mind you can get discounts off Gargash parts if you buy a lot, but last time I compared prices with the UK, they were a bit cheaper here.

Note that Vimesa (Lip) does not make shock absorbers for the G.
Otherwise, they are regarded in Spain as good quality and value for money
Umm I am not sure if lipmesa are the same as Lip Tec Gas, but the website I posted certainly has an application for the G, as that is what is fitted on the front axle of mine!
I heard about it from one of the Australian guys over here who used it over there and recommended them.
Btw. did you know your nick has a meaning in Arabic if taken in 2 parts "min UAE" means from the UAE, literally :) Tho I understand you mean Mike in UAE!

You are obviously right  I do apologize but it is true that you can learn everyday something new!
This is a day that will go down in my brief G history... :)
well done M2dxb!
sorry jesus......just a bit of fun and you are right,we learn something new as we get older.
For M2dxb: I used to use Gargash but got ripped off on work once too often. I source parts from them if there is absolutely no alternative. I use Max Garage in Al Barsha for those jobs I can't do. Excellent service, friendly and very reasonalbe. Thanks for the notes on the shocks.
Mike.
