Hi,

I have a bit of a dilemma: I have recently bought a lovely old 300GD which I found whilst doing my rounds as a vet. It would have been rude not to for the money(my wife doesn't agree  )
Bodywork is in remarkable condition, started chatting to the ownner who then brought out its service history WOW!
One very pampered G, it was taken in religiously for every service and even for things like: owner noticed squeek etc.
The best thing was however that it had a NEW engine fitted 20000 miles ago for £4000. And according to the receipt that was just for the engine
Recently it has had a fueltank, clutch, clutch master and slave cylinder.
So the idea was to turnn it into a nice little runabout for my wife with a bit of a tidyup and a respray.

Now I have stumbled onto a 617A engine for decent money and have been thinking: should I put it into the old 300GD or should I keep it original?
It has the 4speed gearbox by the way.
If I keep it original then I would have a spare 617A engine for if/when my other 617A breaks
aaarghh, decisons decisions

Another point is that i would like to trailer my G to events etc, would the NA diesel with the 4speed box be up to that? Seems to pull like train compared to my original 5speed NA diesel!

any advice greatfully received

Thanks

Richard

Well i guess you was in the right at the right time mate!I'd keep the body and g/box but put a 617a or n/a 603.Its all about power(grunt)which was the old g's biggest problem.Good luck richard and post some pics.

:D if your using it as a run a round for your wife and she doesnt do a lot of milage keep it as it stands for the reliabilaty will be better.
you dont want to be repairing two G at the same time in mid winter :(
and service parts for a standard 617 are pence .
thats my pennys worth .

Re: advice and opinions please

Richard,
I am with Foneman on that one,
"if it's not broke dont fix it"
especially since it has only 20,000 miles on a new engine, fitted by Mercedes ?, and it is going so well.
What milage on it out of interest ?
And what happened the first alledgely indestructible 617 engine, esp. if it was getting such regular servicing and attention from a Mercedes ? garage ?
Could the owner really have done a million or so miles, well 500,000 at least.
I am just jealous is all, mine is NEARLY as good, except it has not got a new engine.
Best wishes,
Marcus

Thanks for all your replies, it does make sense to keep the original engine in, I know BUT......... Think I will leave as is for the time being and wait for the complaints from the wife

The milage is about 90K backed up by all the old MOT's and service records, there is an invoice somewhere in that file that indicates the G being recovered by the garage and then further investigation to what was wrong with it, followed by an invoice for a new engine!
I will try and dig it out from my 'filingsystem'

Could ofcourse be a massive hoax and I fell for it  but i don't think/hope so

Thanks again

Richard

I would definitely keep the OM617 and use the turbo one somewhere else
