fanbelt adjustment

i have just got a 280 GE A4 Auto LWB petrol Wagen. I have no manuals and i need to adjust the alternator belt I can see a top bolt and a lower one that seems to be in a toothed track. Any thoughts please Gary

Hi Loosen all the bolts holding the alternator to its cradle..some g's had a tensioning fitment at the top of the alternator closest to the pulley.others not.use a prybar between the block and the case of the alternator.move alternator assembly away from the engine block by levering the prybar until the belt has approx 3mm of flex at the middle point between the fan and alternator pulleys.tighten all the bolts you loosened..good idea to check the condition of the belt... look for cracks and loose fibres.if in doubt change the belt...

Many thanks for that I will have a go tomorrow Is it just the two bolts I can see top and bottom at front of Alternator? Thanks again Gary
