BFG's?

I know this has probably been covered before but here goes anyway
I’m now canvassing opinions on tyres. Turned up at the tyre depot today with the intension of getting some 255/75 15 BFG AT’s to go on my 463 300G (presently has 255/75 15 Michelins). However as I turned up had second thoughts.
Should I go up a size? 265’s? Will they fit OK?
Or how about Goodyear AT/R’s? Although I do have a high opinion of BFG MT’s I’ve never used AT’s.
Intended use:
Everyday family car.
Work car, some off road (easy stuff) around 10-15K miles / year.
Boat launching.
Morocco trip, plus others if we don’t end up divorced :(
Won’t be used for anything extreme off road (that’s why I can’t bring myself to sell the 280)

AT's are the one to go for general and sand use, Mt's will just dig in when you dont need it, and slightly noiser., BFG last for ever, i,e 50k. The price of the a BFG 265 would be around £100 + the vodka. There are cheaper AT's on the market so you need to look at how many miles you will do, and if you will keep the G long enough to warrant the extra cost. I cant praise BFG high enough, and like Fixy says, see what Tyreman has to say about compound's etc .

I would go for 265's Russ, They will fit and look good as well. In SA the guys stoped using the BFG's in sand because the do not deal well with running at very low presure, which is needed in sand. This is the only negative thing I have ever heard of BFG, but I have heard it from a few people, including the current SA offroad racing champ. I was going to fit Wranglers for my trip, but second choise was BFG.

Russ, stick with the Michelins for a while. I have been to some rough places with mine. Quiet on the road. Long lasting.

If you want to dispose of them let me know. Aren't they almost new?

Whilst the BFG MT is an excellent tyre, near everywhere, I am afraid that I have severe concerns about the BFG AT's ability to deal with hot/rocky terrain. The problem being the sipes in the tread area being cut up on gravel roads and then the tyre throwing off its tread. Between myself and my brother we went through two sets of five each in less than 10k miles. Result: 3 bent wings on one car, two on the other, one ripped off exhaust, several bent floor panels, another car behind damaged as it was hit by complete tread coming off tyre. Tyre size was 245/75-16 and were never off-roaded.
Were replaced by BFG MT's which are the totally opposite - seem to last forever and work perfectly in the kalahari, though you need fairly decent power with them in the sand. Low power vehicles, ie 300GD, need a smooth a tyre as possible for sand, locals in the kalahari use totally bald ones as they work best.
To sum it up, if you're going into hot rocky terrain, stay well clear of BFG AT's.

This has been confirmed by the off-road racers in SA. STAY AWAY FROM BFG IN THE HEAT/GRAVEL
