Evening Gents/Ladies,
Having read this forum fairly comprehensively of late I would just like to post a 'tip'.

Bought a 300Gds 90' last weekend, one thing I noticed straight away was reserve lamp on all the time.
Stripped out sender and found black gunge in bottom of tank and in sender tube assembly.
Cleaned out sender only to find reserve wire broken and floating around.

Priced new unit from MB @ £108+vat!!

Not too keen on that I decided to repair my old unit.

Tag off bottom of sender assembly had broken off.
(this is where reserve wire is attached to sender frame)

Made up a repair tag for sender frame base and soldered in place.
Stripped a length of cable and used one strand to repair/replace broken reserve wire from tag to sender terminal.
Tested float cleared new wire, ok.

Re-fitted sender and tested operation, ok.

Total time taken 45 mins.

Please accept my apologies if this has been covered elsewhere and I have not seen it. Or it makes no sense at all!

Regards
Peter

Re: Tank Sender unit.

Hi that black gunge slops around inside the bottom of the tank which could have caused your original problem ..it also gets sucked up in to the inline filter in the engine bay .this is obvious by the discolouration of the filter assembly..only way to remove the gunge is to flush the tank. a large container... two strong bodies to vigorously rock the vehicle from side to side and somebody to pour (heating oil is better than petrol or diesel) into the tank filler neck after draining the tank dry and replacing the bung...repeat the drain and shake process until you get clean heating oil in the container...the other way is to remove the tank in order to shake it about but numerous problems can arise... re old hoses. .tank retaining straps..rock deflector panel corrosion etc rgds

Another way to clean the tank is a method very often used in Africa and very effective:
1)Remove tank
2)Hang on wire attached to tree branch
3)Pour in a few handfulls of coarse river sand
4)Add 5 litres water
5)Close all holes and filler cap
6)Shake vigourously, turning every now and then to get all sides. This is quite easy as the weight is suspended by the wire.
7)After an hour or so, rinse thoroghly and check
8)Should be shiny clean inside, free of dirt and rust
9)Leave out to dry(in Blighty heater may be needed)
10)Re-assemble everything

Works brilliantly and costs nothing - done it many times.

Re: Tank Sender unit.

Thanks for the additional info/advice chaps.

In my rush to sort the 'gunge' issue out I threw a couple of Forte 'Fuel system cleaner' in and hoped for the best??

I noticed in the bottom of the 463 tank there is a shroud over the tank pick-up. This obviously makes life very difficult when trying to clean it out effectively.

The second fault with regard to this is I found that when attempting long hills on my way back from purchasing the vehicle I was down to 45mph.
In the end I had to slip-stream behind my other car to aid our terminal velocity.

I'm guessing that the 'gunge' was blocking the fuel pick-up and causing starvation and/or air to be drawn into the system?

After a major service, brake overhaul, underbody treatment, chassis touch-up, tyre replacement, rear suspension replacement and possible exhaust replacement the 'G' should be ready for a good test drive! (hopefully next week?)

Peter
