Have to agree, as this is the first G I have heard of needing that much welding.
Never heard of a rear crossmember needing welding either

Re: Viewing SOS

do yourself a favour, save a bit more money or wait a little longer, prices are coming down, and older ones are becoming parts suppliers. False economy. Work out a budget, and what you are prepared to spend on it. And buy one done, unless you like hard work, and upsetting the wife.

Re: Viewing SOS

I dont think Vicki J has a wife

Seriously though Vicki, it sounds like the ebay one is much worse than JYV, who is looking better by the day (proper jump seats installed, electrical gremlins resolved, side steps purchased, replacement body panels purchased etc etc)

Want to buy it back when it's all done (properly !!!!!) ?!?!

Undoubtedly the advice is that if you can't do it yourself, you'd be better off finding a "properly" restored one, paying someone to do it up doesnt make financial sense, and usually corners need to be cut when the budget starts drying up......

Regards

John

Re: Viewing SOS

nope, haven't had to resort to a wife (yet - but i might get driven to it, they're much more use than all those hubbies spending hours under a metal bonnet in the secure knowledge that house, kids, and dinner are all taken care of...)

sigh.... one day there'll be a Gals GWOA and then you lads bettah watch out....

hi jonny - how about a pic (to cheer me up) of the new improved JYV? delighted to hear of progress, you're just what it needed. Wd gladly buy it back (cheeky boy) if it wasn't that i don't want another lwb ....

sigh.... one day there'll be a Gals GWOA and then you lads bettah watch out....

seriously guys, thanks for all the cautious advice... trouble is, i love the old and (to some slightly shabby) edgy G's far more than the newer ones (recaro? jeez, gimme a break!!), and am sadly inclined to lose head as well as heart to something that looks more like a weathered yorkshire crag than a miami slicker, but you're right, i need one with all its essentials already in good nick.... so am going to get practical immediately and start buying lottery tickets....

Re: Viewing SOS

PS: the G that started this post, has been ebayed for £1100.. so much for prices going down....

I spoke to the seller, he'd only expected about 250, rust pretty bad and in bad places (eg rear door falls off when opened)... so you guys were right..... did someone mention boats? - that's what he does for a living, said it pulls a 3-4ton boat easier than any of the range rovers he had before.... but the engine is sweet, such a pity i'm not a diyer.

Re: Viewing SOS

I am probably an avid a diy-er as there can ever be, but wouldn't have dreamt of resurrecting it - organ donor and that's it. For that sort of money, you can find a fairly decent one. All you need is a bit of patience.
And I really agree 100% with the type of G you like. Something you can do anything with. Muddy boots, oily overalls, dirty parts in the back and oh those idiots in their shiny new BMWs and Audis believing the world should make way for them, cutting up as they like. To them, the scraggy looking G says:"You wanna try? Bring it on then and lets see..." I regard myself as quite a considerate driver, letting people pull out of junctions, etc, but blatant arrogance and pisstake(sorry) meets cold (G) steel.

Re: Viewing SOS

Exactly! I've got no use for a vehicle that needs to see the hairdresser twice a week. It's bad enough keeping the house clean, I don't want to have to worry about upholstery and carpetting when i'm off camping or hauling stuff to the tip. I haven't the time, I haven't the patience, and I need wheels that carry anything and get me anywhere I want. Gimme She-Ra's battle-wagen anytime!

... interesting you mention the glitz brigade road-hogs, i'd thought that was just a 'female' G-preference! Driving my G was as stress-free as a hot bath, one of the main reasons being that other drivers don't mess you around... even motorway lorries rarely cut in! i can be the gentle calm ladylike creature i am (oh yes), and not have to have a fit of the Maggie-Thatchers just to survive on the roads!
