Hello all,
I am fairly new on here, visited on and off over the past year or so.
I am a fully qualified MB and BMW technician. I run my own specialist business in Essex. I have owned several G's over the past 8 years..... The attraction lead me to purchase a 300GDS 91' some three weeks ago.
I realise finding a mint vehicle for realistic money is very difficult if not impossible? On that basis I opted for a genuine example with fully documented history, pretty good shape? Or so I thought!

Suffered with serious fuel starvation on my journey back home (gunge in tank) to start with. A few other minor mechanical issues to deal with and off we go?? I opted to replace the rear springs and shock absorbers last weekend, while attempting this feat I could not resist cleaning up the surrounding area and freshen it up with some paint and underbody wax.... Well by the time I had finished poking around the spring saddle had perforations in the side and the shock mounting had serious corrosion issues!!!!!!!
No point getting upset I thought? After all the car is quite old and obviously corrosion has taken it's toll. I have now stripped the rear arches off and touched in body work where required. Spring saddles are on order from Germany and local engineering firm is manufacturing repair section for the chassis tube, shock mount still needs to be sourced.
Sounds worse than it really is, rekon alot of owners would just use it as is but I'm a bit of a perfectionist!
As a result of the chassis issue I have now stripped the rear lamps out and intend to waxoyl the whole rear once finished.
All I require now is a full stainless exhaust system to replace the rusty origional and a few trim items listed in the 'Wanted' section.
Looking forward to driving a fully functional restored example.
Regards
Peter

PS. I have emailed the GWOA concerning rear shock mounts. I have not recieved a reply as yet, can anyone confirm if these are still available??

Re: GWOA Membership and vehicle ownership.

Thanks for the advice.
I've emailed them today and await a response.

I bought the vehicle privately in Northampton area. Full MB history and really tidy. Cleanest engine bay I've ever seen. Hadn't been steam cleaned either!
Just realise that these vehicles are 15+ years old and will require a bit of TLC, part of the ownership.
At least I have the equipment and ability to sort it all out in house, would be really pissed if I had to involve a third party.$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

Peter

Peter, I am pretty sure that you can get the upper rear shock mounts directly from MB. Unfortunately, my remote EPC is not funcional right now -and my EPC administrator is on holiday! Perhaps somebody oaut there can look it up

No pictures as yet but I will sort some out during the repair process.

I have been in contact with MB and the only repair section for the rear end are the spring cups and panhard rod turret? Looks like I will have to get the mounts specially made!

Thanks for the input Guys.

Peter

As I suspected, the rear shock upper mounts can be bought from your friendly Mercedes dealer. It's marked as part # 17 in the attached picture and the part numbers are A4603201678 (LHS) and A4603201778 (RHS). Price is € 31.26 + VAT in Europe

Also, the rear spring saddles can be bought from MB (marked as # 22 in the attached picture). Part number is A4633202078 for either side. No idea about price.

Hey Mortinson,
You are truly a top chap indeed!
Thankyou so much for taking the time to look into this for me.
I have contacted my local MB dealer and they told me that the mounts were not available!! Not really surprising as they are absolutely useless.... Cause me no end of trouble on a daily basis.
Quite surprised that the mounts are not shown with the spring saddles and chassis??
The spring saddles are £59each +vat.

Thanks again.
Kind Regards
Peter

The EPC consists of a number of pages for the subgroup 31 Frame. What you see in the screen printouts are two of them.

Re: GWOA Membership and vehicle ownership.

Got the shock mounts a couple of days ago.
Cost £27+vat each and had to come in from Germany.

Organised some T45 steel tube to 'sleeve' inside the shock mount chassis tube. By the time I've finished nothing should look out of place? It will be really strong, ready for some action!
Camera is at the ready for detailed pictures on here.

Peter

Re: GWOA Membership and vehicle ownership.

UPDATE AS PROMISED:

The G Wagen came back this week from having the rear suspension welding work carried out. Initially the spring cups and shock mounts appeared to have a smalll amount of 'surface' corrosion. Numerous individuals insisted that the suspension is 'over-engineered' and replacement was not required.

I have a pile of scrap/rusty metal that I will be taking photos of and posting on here as a warning to anyone that may doubt the durability of thier own vehicles' suspension.

Both o/s/r & n/s/r spring cups and shock mounts have been replaced with new and the front chassis tube sections have been sleeved with custom made T6 steel reinforcements. All done by a truly professional local guy at a very reasonable price.

I only have a few more trims to re-fit and await the arrival of my stainless steel exhaust system and off we go :) .

Pictures to follow soon.

Pictures of rear spring cups and shock absorber mounts.
They look pretty bad eh? Didn't look as bad when in place and functional. The only real give away was when I hit them with a 24oz ball peen hammer!

Re: GWOA Membership and vehicle ownership.

Nearly ready......... Just been waiting for MB to sort out my new fuel tank protection plate mounting brackets. After a three week wait they have now informed me that the two front brackets and associated plates are no longer available!!
My only option is to have some fabricated.

Once the protection plate is fitted the rear bumper, arch liners etc can go on and we're ready to go.

Picture attached of the G so far.

Peter
