GWOA Membership and vehicle ownership.
Hello all,
I am fairly new on here, visited on and off over the past year or so.
I am a fully qualified MB and BMW technician. I run my own specialist business in Essex. I have owned several G's over the past 8 years..... The attraction lead me to purchase a 300GDS 91' some three weeks ago.
I realise finding a mint vehicle for realistic money is very difficult if not impossible? On that basis I opted for a genuine example with fully documented history, pretty good shape? Or so I thought!
Suffered with serious fuel starvation on my journey back home (gunge in tank) to start with. A few other minor mechanical issues to deal with and off we go?? I opted to replace the rear springs and shock absorbers last weekend, while attempting this feat I could not resist cleaning up the surrounding area and freshen it up with some paint and underbody wax.... Well by the time I had finished poking around the spring saddle had perforations in the side and the shock mounting had serious corrosion issues!!!!!!!
No point getting upset I thought? After all the car is quite old and obviously corrosion has taken it's toll. I have now stripped the rear arches off and touched in body work where required. Spring saddles are on order from Germany and local engineering firm is manufacturing repair section for the chassis tube, shock mount still needs to be sourced.
Sounds worse than it really is, rekon alot of owners would just use it as is but I'm a bit of a perfectionist!
As a result of the chassis issue I have now stripped the rear lamps out and intend to waxoyl the whole rear once finished.
All I require now is a full stainless exhaust system to replace the rusty origional and a few trim items listed in the 'Wanted' section.
Looking forward to driving a fully functional restored example.
Regards
Peter
PS. I have emailed the GWOA concerning rear shock mounts. I have not recieved a reply as yet, can anyone confirm if these are still available??
have you tried ORC.de?they are G specialists.where did buy it from peter?
i think we all suffer the same luck in some way or another.good luck.
Peter, I am pretty sure that you can get the upper rear shock mounts directly from MB. Unfortunately, my remote EPC is not funcional right now -and my EPC administrator is on holiday! Perhaps somebody oaut there can look it up

Sounds good to me.one of my customers has a mechanic friend called terry white i think,he has owned his G for 15 years so i am told.his garage is on the way to purfleet by the roundabout off the A13.I think he must have good connections,so i will pass on his number when i get it.

As I suspected, the rear shock upper mounts can be bought from your friendly Mercedes dealer. It's marked as part # 17 in the attached picture and the part numbers are A4603201678 (LHS) and A4603201778 (RHS). Price is € 31.26 + VAT in Europe
Also, the rear spring saddles can be bought from MB (marked as # 22 in the attached picture). Part number is A4633202078 for either side. No idea about price.
once again jesus you have shown your passion for the marque!
Quite surprised that the mounts are not shown with the spring saddles and chassis??
The spring saddles are £59each +vat.
The EPC consists of a number of pages for the subgroup 31 Frame. What you see in the screen printouts are two of them.
where's merv when you need him, well done jesus.
good job , keeps the critter rolling for some more years ,

well done peterm, its great to see members with so much love for their G's.
excitement maybe
Thanks for the advice.
I've emailed them today and await a response.
I bought the vehicle privately in Northampton area. Full MB history and really tidy. Cleanest engine bay I've ever seen. Hadn't been steam cleaned either!
Just realise that these vehicles are 15+ years old and will require a bit of TLC, part of the ownership.
At least I have the equipment and ability to sort it all out in house, would be really pissed if I had to involve a third party.$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

Peter
