Hi everybody,

Hope you spent the festivities in the manner you wished for--and are not too hung over!
Just a query for the new year: Having run my diesel G for years and years on Shell RIMULA 15W - 40 I find that my lubeoil consumption is steadily rising, Valve stem oil seals are ok so I reckon my oil rings are on the way out. However it occurs to me that if I were to use a higher viscosity lube it would postpone the evil day. Now years ago Mobil marketed a jolly nice 20W - 50 oil designed for commercial application but I can't remember the prefix barring it started with a D, [devcon, diacon or something]

Any ideas out there. It has to be a proprietry brand as I am very fussy with my lubes. I change at 3000 without exception and am aiming to get 1/2 million out of the old brute on original equipment.

Thats all, take care out there.

David

Re: lube oil

David,
The name 'devcon' as far as I know refers to an engineering compound manufacturer. Two part mix for alloy casting repair.
May I suggest the useage of a good quality engine oil flushing additive or flushing oil. Liquid Moly produce a TUV approved flushing additive that may help release your oil control rings and alleviate the problem?
My main concern using a higher viscosity lubricant is the quality of the product, generally the 20W50 is associated with economy/cheap oils and as such is inferior.
Kind Regards
Peter

Check this site out. Since you change your oil every 3000 miles intervals, there is no need to be overly concerned about the brand of oil you use, in my opinion. Mineral oil tends to degrade from, around 4000 miles on wards. Since, you do the oil change earlier, you should have no great worries.

To prolong engine life, avoiding short journeys, i.e. less than five miles a trip or any sooner than the engine does not have a chance to reach its normal operating temperature.

Using Fully synthetic oils in this case is a waste of your money, since it suffers oil degradation too. F/Synthetic oil is of more use at long distance, Motorway driving, where is has the advantage over Mineral Oils in so far, that it withstands oil break down under high temperatures. This, is a cause for wear in the engine too.
