Hi guys.

I have an engine & box out of an '89 280GEL at the mo, on a crane pending reinstallation. The box was removed with the long wire actuator rod (offside of box) disconnected from the lever mechanism under the car.
Whilst weve been busy I droppped the box, i think on that side, allthough it didnt fall far :( .
My question is, i there a solenoid etc which would prevent the lever on the side of the gearbox moving significantly? I can move it forwards and backwards a bit, but cant feel anything moving internally, its as if the lever is hitting a stop mechanism or the likes. I cant think i can have damaged the mechanism as the wire actuating rod kind of got bent a bit (not a lot) therefore that would have taken any strain(?).
I'm sure you can appreciate i am reluctant to put the whole lot back in if the box appears bu**ered, but i know very little about autoboxes.
The output flange/shaft at the rear is in "neutral" ie rotates freely without rotating the torque converter/flywheel, and the same for the t/converter- rotates freely without moving the output flange (checked prior to bolting back to engine). This is the same for all of the limited travel of the selector shaft/lever.

The 'box has not been refilled yet.

I feel a right muppet about this one, but I am flummoxed, so to speak.

As ever, thanks a load for your help.......

Re: Autobox selector lever

Hi the lever acts as a flow divider and moves through a small radius with positive detents (notches) if you still have the rod connected to the gear selector have someone move the lever and you watch the length of travel between park and 1.if you measure the length of the lever on the gearbox and use a compass this will give the radius of travel. then try to move the lever against the detents.through the radius and if the lever looks like it lines up with the movement of the gear lever rod .put it back together .if the lever is bent in towards the gearbox case when you get it together you can re set it to suit the gear lever rod alignment ...no obvious cracks in the case ??? rgds and a happy new year .....

Re: Autobox selector lever

Thanks for that, but the problem is I don't appear to feel any detents at all, I've just nipped out to the garage in the lovely Surrey weather : here are the results of my amateur photography showing the total amount of clockwise and anticlockwise travel, no detents to be felt though :(

No obvious cracks, lever doesnt look bent, rod into box moves with lever..........

Re: Autobox selector lever

Problem solved. Think outside of the box. Always check that the linkage and lever you are looking at actually does what you think it does
The linkage and lever above is on the offside, and had I completed transferring the throttle linkage and fulcrum points over it would have been completely obvious that it is some form of accelerator linkake-driven lever.
The selector lever (shaft), on the other hand, is on the nearside of the gearbox      and, in this case, moves fine
Installation on Friday, hopefully :D

Hi That's the "kickdown" lever... when your cruising along at 60+ and you stamp the accelerator pedal to the floor the Gearbox kicks down a gear...just need to rig it at the linkage end to do this properly.....
