Happy new Year all. I am due an MOT and front windscreen washers do not work as no volts to washer unit. When I press wash button wipers work but no water. If i bypass washer unit from battery it runs but does not seeem to pump water so perhaps a second problem. Any thoughts as to whay wipers work but no electrics to pump Any odd fuses somewhere Any thoughts or ideas welcome 1987 280GE LWB petrol Gary

Re: windscreen washers

Hi the contact in the wiper switch for the washer motor can corrode as can the bulkhead plug if there has been a water leak from the wiper spindles. the pump impellors are prone to stop working due to dirt in the plumbing /water tank.. remove the pumps.. strip the base and clean then run the pump using water from a jar or bucket. purge the onboard pipes and tank before refitting the pumps (front and rear wash are separate pumps)

Re: windscreen washers

Hi push the drivers seat as far back as it will go...with a torch lay on your back with your head under the dash /steering column... you will see various multi pin plugs. look for the wires closest to the steering column check for green gunge around the plug area..while your there might as well check the others..if gungy separate each plug in turn and treat with a mixture of baking powder / bi-carbonate of soda and water "one teaspoon to a cup of water" things will begin to froth immediately...after maximum ten minutes flush plug assembly with clean water and blow dry with a hairdryer.use same treatment to any or all electrical connections including the battery terminals "BEST DONE WITH THE BATTERY DISCONNECTED" if obvious signs of Green gunge.(verdigris)

Re: windscreen washers

Was a mile away from you today Gary  but not in my G wagen :(

Try some switch cleaner (a couple of quid from Maplins) in the switch assembly - it fixed a headlight flash issue on my multifunction switch. Just a thought ref the not pumping water when you jump power to it, are your live and earth mixed up?

Although you won't need washers at the moment lol :(

Regards

John
