Can 461 diff gears be used in a 1990 460 . Need to go to 3.11 or there abouts and wonder if the later model 460 gears will fit okay before I go order them. What choice of ratios are there? Shame transfer gears cannot be changed???

Hi John and welcome back - haven't seen you on here for a while.
The standard gears are 4.9, So I am wondering why you would want such a big jump to 3.11?
Changing the diff gears is quite expense and a headache. You can achieve the same effect and other benefits with bigger tyres.

It is going okay but I was elsewhere for the latter part of last year. Determined to sort it out this year. I see the 461 290GTD has a 3.72 diff and my 460 has 5.28 so playing with tyres is not an option. Need to know if the VG080 in the 460 is the same ratio (1:1) as the 461. If so AND the gears WILL fit in the 460 housings I will swap them over. Dont want to order bits that will not fit.

Re: Changing diff ratio in a 460

Been driving my 460 LWB with the Sprinter OM 602 engine and it runs very well at low speeds mainly because that is all it will do. Thought a diff chage was in order but thing not. It just does not want to go more than 80 k/p/h at 2500 RPM. Hardly the output of a modern diesel engine. Will have the ECU checked and see if the fault is there and perhpas the turbo rechecked. Odd thing is it is SO pleasant to drive ...as long as I dont leave the city!!!. So for all of you out there thinking of putting a modern MB diesel inot you G wagon be aware it is a lot of work .

Re: Changing diff ratio in a 460

Tanex, I had 3 sprinters 312's,(290TD) and I had an issue when 2 would not rev over 2500revs, except when clutch was depressed, it turned out to be a sensor on the gearbox that was faulty, on both, on seperate occasions, in fact on another sprinter (413 cdi,220cdi) which I own does the same, will rev over 2500 if the clutch is depressed, when in neutral but will not when released ?? dont know why it does this.

Anyway, there is a connection with the sprinter gearbox and engine, some where, maybe mercman can explain this, so if you are using the G gearbox this could be why it wont rev over 2500rpm.

Well Peter Perfect that is something to go on. Donor engine was from a Sprinter Manual so had to add a flex plate etc to mate it to the automatic. There was a switch added but think that was for TDC. Will check it out . Thanks very much . I may soon be able to go up hills!!!!

Re: Changing diff ratio in a 460

How you getting on with this, tanex?
Have been away from here for a while.
The 2500rpm limit seems like "limp-home" mode engaged.
Is the diagnostic socket in your loom still connected and functional? If so, get the codes read and reset if required.
Or, if you want to try something else and cheaper first, disconnect the battery for an hour or so, unplug the ecu and leave for a couple of hours. The reconnect ecu and battery in that order. Sometimes does the trick. If the "fault condition" is still present, it will go back into limp-home mode, in which case you'll have to get the codes read and correct what it wants you to...

Well it has not been for naught. Often a project that goes this long can end up being a waste of time but even as it is it must be the most economical g on the planet. I will try your suggestions. And yes the diagnostic sockets works as
it should. I have put lots of info of this conversion on a dvd if there are any of you out there that may want to do a similar conversion. The 460 is RHD .john
