Re: Another cypriot member!

you are absolutely right with the conversion i have had done;

the engine mounts were re-positioned.

the sump was re shaped to clear the diff.

i am not sure about the viscous though.

the prop shaft was shortened.

i have attached a few photos so you can see.all in all i am very happy with the job done alexis, the G runs smooth and as quick as the 230E engine and alot better than the n/a 617.i have compared the speed up the kyrenia pass and on a straight motorway and its alot better than ever.but i think if it was turbo charged and intercooled it would fly
(by the way,my engine is out of a w124 and not a 463,if that makes things easier)

what would the parts cost alexis for this job :?: i think if it was done my G would have about 150bhp,which would be great :!: :!:

how does your G go on mountain roads in comparison to the local jap pick ups  do you have any heating problems :?:

what did you do with the 617a engine alexis 8) :?:

rgds hussein.

According to STT (on the following link - go to "business areas", "Engine Systems", "Products", "Turbo Systems") the max output on the 603 conversion is 163 bhp / 300 Nm. The most important number here is the torque.

http://www.sttemtec.com/index.php?show=1185_ENG&&page_anchor=http://www....

The cost of my conversion ... you'll need to take a seat ... came to 2000 CYP (in 1999).

As you can imagine the driving is a great improvement over stock. Going up inclines it pulls like a train.

Reason I paid so much is because the cost of an engine swap with necessary modifications would have been higher. We did 602 engine conversions and I know ! Also the 617 engine is much stronger than the 602 and 603 and can last regardless of abuse (remember we have the tall 4.9 gearing which means very high motorway revs.

As I said before, the STT conversion for the 603 engine (as noted on their website) is for the W124 saloon. This means that all attachments of ancillaries, piping etc is for the saloon. Therefore in order to fit it into the 460 engine bay you'll need to improvise. Anyway your car is LHD so you at least have the space on the right hand side to put things (on mine it's quite cramped with the brake servo, air filter housing and A/C compressor)

The 617A engine I had, went into a 1982 300GD along with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

I don't have pictures to show you as I've stripped mine for body repairs. We have a 602 turbo engined 1981 G short to show you if you want.

Hope the above info helps.

Re: Another cypriot member!

thanks for the info alexis,i see you have a few G fans over there!!nice to hear, maybe we can get a small expedition sorted out this summer.are you around in late august?
i will hopefully come over and find you.do you work for mercedes?
i think i can improve my G's performance if you can help me once i move back to cyprus in the end of 2008(god willing ofcourse)

there is alot i want to put right on my G,but three weeks a year in the summer is not enough.i realise that you guys in the south are technically very good and it makes all the difference.

as i mentioned before,my brother is in nicosia and works with his father inlaw as a mercedes dealership. if you ever cross over i am sure he would welcome you.he is also 4x4 mad,but prefers the wrangler!!
he has my G at the moment because i have just sent a hardtop out there and it was fitted last week.i also sent an original BEHR UNDER DASH AIRCON BLOWER and rad for my brother to have fitted(but i do need an a/c compressor) any ideas??

Re: Another cypriot member!

Apologies Hussein, I've been abroad ...

Regarding the A/C compressor, the most common brand used in retrofits is SANDON, although the original one on the GE's is the big/heavy/power greedy YORK (it's the upright bulky compressor you must have seen on the 280GE).

You have to buy or make (copy an original one) engine attachment for the compressor.

Regarding the original BEHR, we used to fit them on the G's (during the 1980's) but also fitted a slimmer and cheaper under dash unit from DIAVIA which was quite effective. I think you have to cut part of the leading edge of the plastic transmission console to fit the piping.

In those days the DIAVIA kits were fitted by a reputable company called Koutsoullis which is now at the Nicosia main industrial zone (close to Orphanides supermarket in Strovolos)

I used to have the DIAVIA kit on my 300GD which I then replaced with the factory kit from the late 80's 460 G.

Daley, I called the seller and here follows the details of the roundabout car as he described them ...

1986 230GE 5-speed manual (imported used from the UK and re-registered in Cyprus ~ 1995)
Black / Black chequered cloth
Alloy wheels wide w/ extended wheelarches
Radio CD Pioneer
91,000 miles
no A/C

Seller said it had some rust spots which he fixed.

Asking price 5,500 CYP but will drop to 5,000 CYP.

I have his name and phone number if you want to pursue ...

Hi Pambos, Sorry about the Tardy response but I've been travelling. I'm in Cyprus around 20 May. Maybe we could hook up?

Thanks for your help on the G, but I'd be looking for a 280.

Daley

Re: Another cypriot member!

Kalispera my friend! I am a Greek Cypriot from Palechori originally. I live in Canada now and am an new member to GWOA.  I saw the word Cypriot when scrolling through the forums.  I have W460 280GE from 1980.  I imported it from Holland, and it has a 617a engine now.  I will post a picture one day soon.
