Re: 4 by 4 tax

Depends how old the vehicle is,,, or more importantly when it was registered in the UK. The banding only effects vehicles registered after 1/3/06.

So £180 for a 460,,

Think thats all correct :?

Um so what does that mean for me and you? Both registered after 1/3/06 no? But both older than the 2001 cut off date.

Re: 4 by 4 tax

I think the banding is as follows:

pre 3/2001 flat rate

3/2001 - 3/2006 bands

post 3/2006 the new higher rate of 300 and then 400 will apply.

Unless you have a one year old G the new hike is not going to catch you.

Re: 4 by 4 tax

So lets unpack this a bit, If I buy a more recent 463 ex germany and register it now it will cost me £400 pa to tax, what I get is a turbo intercooled G for around 18 to 20 k with a posh interior and lots of electronic gismos that you cant off road without a lot of mods and which a back street mechanic can not repair,
I want a G to last the next 10 years, I have a 460 300GD auto swb.
for around 3k I can fit a recon engine turbod and intercooled along with a new auto box and a recon T box for another grand I can externally make it look like a 463 and fit a winch, 460s dont need a snorkel unless you are going to swim, and still pay £180 pa tax. If I want to swoosh down the motor way at 90 mph or rush of to a race track some where in europe I have a choice of my Ranger my wifes Jag my daughters new Golf or any choice of rented car if I fly there.
No contest really, question now is, do I bother to do that to the G or sell it as it is?

Re: 4 by 4 tax

Well Marcus. the labour is my own. the engine is exchange from Crewe the auto box is one I bought a long time ago the Tbox I get recond at a firm in Coventry and the turbo intercooler kit is from STT and again I fit myself.
Can't justify 20 k for a Gucci Wagen when I wouldnt use it as a daily driver, only floggin round the horse shows and the farm, a normally asmatic 300GD hasnt got the balls for it, were it not for my addiction to G Wagens I wouldnt bother.

Re: 4 by 4 tax

I’m with you on this one Bill. The “fit for purpose”460 has a lot going for it (plus maybe the 461 but I have no knowledge of those).
When we got the 463 the plan was to sell the 460 and my wife’s car, end result we’ve kept them all! At the moment I can not bring myself to part with the 460. I just love the utilitarian interior, I literarily clean it out with the hose pipe, scratches, bashes, who cares it adds character! It drives superbly (thanks to Bill wrt to the ride and handling) Plus being a 280 it will actually go faster than a milk float.
Having said that I purposefully went for an early 463, the extent of the electronics being the ABS which is a huge plus over a 460 if you do any miles with your family in tow.
I personnaly wouldn’t touch a newish MB cramed full of spec’ed down to a price electronics. Interestingly had a conversation with my local independent garage the other day and he was very scathing regarding the cost of keeping a newish Merc. on the road, and he runs an E Class as his personnal car.
At the end of the day the 463 was second hand Ford Focus money so I guess I shouldn’t worry too much about using it as a “tool” so I may force myself to part with the 460, but don’t hold your breath.

Gucci-wagen :!:
:D
:)

i like that expression bill :!:

i totally agree with you bill cos thats exactly what i said and went and got a 460.she drives a dream and is worth her weight in Gold :!:

electronics and gizmo's are just a marketing policy.

a 460 is a 460 full stop. nothing more nothing less. no G wagen is gonna waft along like my CLK55 AMG CAB let alone an S-CLASS on he motorway so lets not kid ourselves

i am seem to think that in the last 8 years i have been back in the uk something is going drastically wwong and i am now planning on moving back to n-cyprus in the next couple of years

if there was a small thought of ever getting a newish 463 its dead and buried

Re: 4 by 4 tax

If you take into account that our cousins in Holland Belgium and Germany not to forget the Scandinavian countries pay in excess of £1000.00 pa for 4x4 road tax you can see which way it will go in the UK what ever the colour of government, I forecast that by 2010 it will be a grand, of course you can allways have your G classified as a light truck, ORC sell a kit, but hey ho 460s and the like will increase in value just like in the countries I have mentioned.

Re: 4 by 4 tax

The new £300-£400 rate will apply only to cars registered after March 2006. High-emitting vehicles registered before that fall into band F, tax for which is £205. High-emitting vehicles registered before 2001 attract tax of £180.

Re: 4 by 4 tax

So whos up for a new industry, take a vehicle that falls outside the co2 emmision data date, and modernise it, same chassis no. same registration, but a 300tdi engine or a G500 mill thrasing out lumps of coal into the atmosphere, and only £180 quid car tax, Gordons green theory blown sky high, what about a coal fired 1920 steam engine, Fred Dihbna style, even less tax, showmans rate. Its an absolute load of bollocks.

Of course it is. Aimed at appeasing the gullible half wits aka as tree huggers, ramblers, cyclists / urban terrorists or the pious Prisus owners (who are equally half witted but think they are terribly intelligent)

If you can afford £50K plus for a RR you couldn’t give a stuff about 400 quid a year either that or your company pays.

Re: 4 by 4 tax

Our local Tim nice but dim MP (Owen Patterson) claimed in excess of £6K in travelling expenses this year, which is of course tax free. So I would need to earn around £12K to equal that. No wonder they tried to conceal / not allow this in to the public domain.

Re: 4 by 4 tax

Its all about raising taxes. Most people don't own a newish 4wd. They are therefore not bothered about those that do paying more in tax.

What about all the money councils spend on needless street lighting, the sort they put in just before FYE just to use up their budget.

At least it keeps peoples' minds off the real issues.

Anyone whos been on the a40 lately into london will notice its all been chopped down! i heard it was due to one blowing over, but then also heard it was because of light pollution. Logic here is dont want to cause extra light in the centre of london ( as theres all those rare song birds flying about bayswater!) but leaving a major route and flyover in the dark is fine!

As for teh tax, its a complete farce, my mate's old mini that must at least wipe out one species per journey is cheaper to insure than his 320cdi!

i say give the government them g-wizz things, they are bloody expensive, but it would be much easier for people to pick them off as they drove round!

Tom

Re: 4 by 4 tax

my blood boils when, pre tax budget announcements ,and whilst it was going on, the BBC say the tax for 4x4s is going up, and they quietly mention the gas gusslers as well. Is this to make the 4x4 lobbyists feel happy, I wonder how many of them are driving a mondeo estate that omits over the 250 co2 limit, what a shock they will get when they go to purchase there tax on line next year to find it £400. how I will laugh while driving my 91 5.6 V8 around, only paying £180. The easiest way it to put it on the fuel.

I have 6 trucks, range from 7.5t to 10t, do 10MPG and cause more damage than any 4x4. Road tax is £180 to £200 a year. like nan would say.

Nan = Nana or Grandmama, I think PP is aluding to that he was born of human process, we all know this not to be true, and like the cosmic soup that spawned alien he is the result of a Saturday night collision between 2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps :D

I was seriously looking at buying a unimog for my daily commute as a protest against this totally ridiculous policy/tax..... Just think runs on red legally, no tax to pay period as most are 'agricultural vehicles' and to top it off, is by far more in-efficient than any passenger 4X4 and can wreak havok on 'A' roads topping out at around 55Mph!!
Aside of the above they look the nuts and are great fun to drive both on and off road.

Just my two penneth.

Kind Regards
Peter

Hus55,
Try Atkinson VOS, they are the biggest?? in the country. A Google search brings up a few other sources.
To be fair they range from 8K for something reasonable upwards.

Re: 4 by 4 tax

I wouldn't count on the fact you can run on red. It all depends upon what you are doing, just owning a unimog or tractor is not sufficent, it has to be a qualifying use. The are also tightening up on this.
