Intermittant fault

Our car is a 463 3litre petrol 1992 which we've had for four years.

I have a problem where the car simply stops.

It happens when the car is stationary.

It has never happened to me or the mechanic at the garage where we go (not Merc but I like him and trust him over several years).

My wife simply pulls up at lights or a junction or to open our garage and it stops.

The car is an auto so all that's happened is the application of the footbrake.

We're all really at a bit of a loss.

Any light shed would be greatly appreciated.

Fuel pump relay seems to be something to check.

Yes, thank you, I read the preceeding post but didn't think it was close enough.

Re-reading it again just now I also noted the mention of rich mix when starting. My wife has been saying it can be an interesting time starting after a night's cooling as did the mechanic (he's had it a couple of days) . It restarts no problem after the first of the day.

I think I'll have to take the chance the other fellow did and get a rely.

Thanks again.

Although I have no knowledge of that engine I would guess even at that vintage it would have basic fault code storage. Maybe an idea (assuming your mechanic hasn't already done it) to get the fault codes read.
Not always a precise science (something which main stealers are too incompitent or lazy to figure out) but could point you in the right direction without random and expensive part replacement.

I don't think that that is feasible in a 463. I believe that fuel injection is mechanic and there are no electronics around to store any codes.

Some relay, I think.

Pity, thank you for taking the trouble though. Relay I think.

Re: Intermittant fault

The early 463's with the 3.0 litre engine did not have any fault code reading facilities. I would suspect, particulary, if your car has done around and over 70,000 miles, the distiributor cap and rotor arm is in need of replacement. The distributor electrode usually burns out by then.

Although, this is not a maintence or service item, I recommend this should be checked as a norm, every 60-70,000 miles.

Have it checked out.

Thank you,

It is an early 463.

The car has done 125,000 and the distributer cap has been done (twice I think).

Now, I would go for the relay.

Re: Intermittant fault

this engine poss does have electric diagnoses available easy to check at x11 diagnostic connector look into pin connectors if a pin is in no/3 then fault codes can be read using on/off ratios or even volt meters as a percentage of of battery voltage
check for pin then post reply i will guide you through

Re: Intermittant fault

Thank you for the offer.

Back home and feeling up to looking at this myself, I don't usually touch cars and engines, other than to drive them or feel good in one, hence the G-Wagen:-)

Anyway, whereabouts would I find these pins in the engine bay?

BTW I checked at my local German and Swedish depot and they have a relay at £75+Vat should I be able to identify the right one. They are unable to nail it by the vehicle number on their system. I have the pin layout so if i can find that I can check it. Where would I find the relay please?

I'm prepared to change the relay in any case as it appears to be a consumable item.
