front hub rebuild......................
i stripped and rebuilt my front swivel hub assembly yesterday, replaced both wheel bearings and swivel bearings. when i checked cv joint they boot was shot so i removed it and cleaned up the assembly with white spirit to remove the old lube.i also replaced the wiper seal and paper gasket for the swivel as well as they were shot. i have two questions:
1 why is there an internal oil seal between the swivel and wheel bearings, if you fill the swivel with decent quality grease?
2 why has the cv joint got a boot on it as its totally enclosed/encased in the swivel housing?
only reason for 2 is if you have a catastrophic failure of the swivel wiper seal(landrovers are like this with no cv)
cheers thoughts please anyone? i know im going to horrify the purists!

on the early Cvs there was not boot, you pumped grease in the hub, but grease would still come out of the swivel, however a boot was added later as a secondary precaution.
up them up mate .
Twodogs
why not ?
Yes please post pics!
The extra seals are also there for amateurs that think it's ok to put oil in there if you don't have grease, it's surprising how slowly the oil leaks out :p
and do post pics if possible..this looks like a future job!
because its german and not a landy
WITH THIS IN MIND:- would it not be better for the website/forum to have a technical page showing this rather than posting in the forum, that way it wont get lost.
hello campers im going to do the other side this weekend, is it worth or does anyone want pics of this procedure? just thought it may be helpful !?
